SANIBEL, Fla.- E8’s long stay at the Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW) may come to an end this month.
“Two months ago, we had a very bad fracture of the femur, or thigh bone, and what we see here is that has now completely healed,” said Dr. Heather Barron, who adds the eaglet has certainly come a long way. “He is now off all medications and we’ll re-check again in a couple weeks just to make sure the infection isn’t coming back.”
Barron adds the eaglet’s progress is a result of his training.
“Physical therapy, conditioning, proper feeding, nutrition,” Barron explained. “Continuing to offer him food and shelter and support while he more or less teaches himself to hunt.”

E8 UPDATE: E8 has successfully been catching fish during the remainder of his live prey testing. CROW's veterinary staff is pleased to see that E8 is using both this left and right talon to catch the fish.
E8 is almost 7 months old and the mortality rate for eagles during their first year of life is greater than 50%, but once they have learned to hunt and forage successfully their chances of reaching adulthood are improved. CROW’s Wildlife Rehabilitators and hospital staff have worked diligently to ensure the eaglet has the basic hunting skills needed to survive when returned to the wild.

E8 continues to practice his feeding, hunting, foraging behaviors and problem-solving strategies during his daily enrichment. In this video, he is trying to get the thawed fish that are slightly sticking out of the ball between the leaves. As you can see, E8 is very cautious when approaching the ball and is trying to figure how to get the fish out. Eventually he was successful and ate all of the fish. This enrichment will help him develop natural foraging behaviors in the wild.
