Āwheo hatched on the 22nd of January 2026 and is now 222 days old (1st September), average fledging age is 240 days. He was banded F71 on the 18th of July and received his stainless-steel band R-65203 on the 14th of August.
Āwheo is now very mobile and wanders freely around a large area away from his nest. Increasing attempts at hovering shows that fledging is not far away.
Āwheo was last weighed on the 25th of August, he was 10.2kg. The average weight for day 222 is 9.8kg and he will not be weighed today. He has been fed three times by WYL that we know of over the last week. Potentially, feeds can occur out of view of the cam at this stage. The average weights have levelled out and will start to drop in the next month as is normal prior to fledging. The chicks do not require as much food now that their growing has slowed down. Regurgitating a bolus will also lighten the chick’s weight. Āwheo’s bolus was regurgitated at 5.46am 31st August.
2025/26 season update

A record 40 chicks hatched this season and there are a few more males than females. Weights will level out from now on until dropping prior to fledging in September and were all accounted for this morning. All chicks have now received their alphanumeric and Stainless-steel bands. Prior to fledging the chicks will regurgitate a bolus of indigestible squid beaks as part of the normal preparations for fledging.
