Update from the incubator room:

The chick has been chipping away at the shell while still growing. The opening is now 2x5cm. It is likely that later tomorrow it will be big enough to flex muscles and crack open the shell.

The Chick has hatched 22 January 2026
The chick has hatched, after spending 4 days in the incubator to protect the vulnerable hatchling from fly strike the Plateau chick has hatched weighing 288g. For reference this is a little less than a soda can and this chick is one of the smaller Royalcam chicks to hatch.
WYL and BOK at Plateau nest.

WYL has been on the nest 8 days waiting patiently for his chick to hatch. The chick was returned at 12.17pm.

Toroa are long-lived, slow breeders so the wait is normal for them to wait. The first feed should occur sometime in the next couple of days. The freshly hatched chick still has nutrients from the yolk sac to nourish it.

Short changeovers are now likely due to the chick’s imminent arrival. The Plateau chick is the 11th year of Royalcam live streaming.

The chick will have a health check and be weighed twice a day for the first 5 days then once a day for the following 5 days before moving to weekly weighing.
You will be able to follow the chick’s growth here: https://www.doc.govt.nz/nature/native-a ... ks-weight/
