Kia ora koutou (hello everyone)
The 2025 Royalcam chick.
Early Weigh Day, with Bling!
Since hatching at 286g on the 28th of January, the Signal Station Trig chick has grown to 6.8 kg on day 139 (Monday 16th of June, 2.10 pm). This is a 600g increase on last week’s weight. Today’s weight is just below a healthy weight for a female toroa chick of this age so she may be supplementary fed tomorrow it her parents do not arrive before then. She has approximately 100 days until fledging
We are halfway to fledging in September, all the chicks still have a lot of growing and developing to do.

Comparisons of average male and female chick weights and all the past Royalcam chicks are included. Rangers use weight data to determine when a chick requires feeding intervention.
There have been 2 feeds from GLG and 3 from RLK/A85 since the last weigh in and she was supplementary fed after the weigh in last week. A reweigh on Saturday 14th of June saw a good weight increase to 7.1 kg which is 200g of the healthy weight range, so no supplementary feeding was required then. It has been very calm since then and no further visits from parents occurred.
Around 70% of the toroa diet is squid, but as they are opportunistic feeders’ fish and octopus are also in the diet.
Where they go to find food can be studied via satellite tracking.
But what about the bling?
A yellow band inscribed with E55 is now Signal Station Trigs chick permanent colour marker. This is an individual band so that we will recognise her in years to come. Did you know that albatross can live to 60 years or more? She will also receive a Stainless-Steel band on the opposite leg closer to fledging. Look out for our close-up video of this work on social media as this was done off cam.
Males receive black bands and females get the yellow bands; the E refers to the 2025 season. There are quite a few spare bands available in case of breakage or lose
