Today's GPS update
Thanks to the generous donations on the Otago Peninsula Trusts give-a-little page we can share the tracking of 10 juveniles including the orphaned Top of Bluff Track.
The starting point was at Pukekura, Dunedin, New Zealand and they have travelled across the south Pacific Ocean to the water of South America.
They will not make landfall until they return to Pukekura in 4 to 10 years’ time.
Today's GPS tag update of juvenile toroa from Pukekura tagged 25th of September and 5th of October 2024. They fledged between the 27th of September to the 14th of October 2024.
The five males and five females were 230 to 264 days old at fledging.
The distance across Te Moana-nui-a-kiwa | Pacific Ocean, is over 9000 km.

Kia ora koutou (hello everyone)
Season 10 of Royalcam will be a big milestone for us. We are keeping likely pairs under wrap and will share the activities of past Royalcam pairs once the cam is at its new location. This will happen once egg laying has finished to ensure no nesting toroa are disturbed at this very sensitive time. We also want to include all options in our final decision of the new location.
Egg laying continues throughout November and both parents take turns to incubate the egg while the other forages off the coast of Aotearoa/New Zealand.
In the meantime, older eggs are being candled to check for fertility. We are very lucky to be able to use artificial eggs when an egg is infertile or fails for some reason. In this way the pair is held for future foster options, and we can maximize the number of chicks fledging.

All the older eggs are fertile this season, however.
