Restoring Pukekura/Taiaroa Head
A new project aims to cloak Pukekura/Taiaroa Head in vegetation once more, to restore the mauri of the area for the benefit of all those living on and connected to the whenua there.
Whakakākahu i a Pukekura has been launched by the management trust Te Poari a Pukekura, which is a partnership between Korako Karetai Trust, Te Rūnanga o Ōtākou, the Department of Conservation and Dunedin City Council.
About 2,000 specially selected trees, shrubs and grasses will be planted in the much visited, sparsely vegetated area between the car park and the lighthouse viewing platform, known as O Te Rakihiwi. This will add to other extensive plantings carried out at Takiharuru/Pilots Beach by the Korako Karetai whānau over many years.
The success of this planting relies on the control of rabbits, so rabbit exclusion fencing will be installed, and an extensive rabbit control operation will begin at Pukekura this winter.
Weighing News (10.24 am):Top Flat chick is 140 days old and weighs 9.6 kg. Last week he weighed 9.9 kg. The average male weight at this age is 9.9 kg There is approximately 100 days till fledging. LGL was seen coming in to feed her chick yesterday while the live stream was off-line. There was a few calm days after weigh day last week and the parents have not been in as frequently, but the slight weight drop this week is not a concern.
The weight increases plateau at this stage, and we will start to see a drop in weight prior to fledging.
Top Track chicks weight graph will be updated here: https://www.doc.govt.nz/nat...
Top Flat Track chick is 132 days old and weighs 10 kg. Last week he weighed 9.4 kg. BOK and WYL were seen feeding their chick yesterday while the power was out. Both BOK and WYL have continued to come in quite frequently. On Sunday WYL dropped a large piece of octopus which was too big and heavy for his chick.
The heaviest chick today is the Observation Post chick who weighed in at 10.8 kg but not all chicks were weighed today. The chick ROY has been feeding is huge for a female, so we assume he is still bringing in food along with both parents.
Feather development:
There is a lot more of the dark feathers showing through the down now that we are into the winter months. These feathers take a while to grow and lose their keratin sheaths before they become feathers ready for flight.
