Kia ora koutou (hello everyone)
TF chick is 35 days old and weighs 2.2 kg at 11.12 this morning slightly down from a healthy 2.3 kg last week. The chick is not hungry at this stage. As I type this LGL has come in, and as always, the weights refer to the time they were taken.
TFT chick is 27 days old and weighs 2.2kg at 11.15 this morning up from 1.4 kg last week.

A health check was conducted on the remaining chicks who were not checked last week. Both the Top Flat and the Top Flat Track chicks had nice round belly’s and are obviously well fed. The tiniest sample of blood was taken for analysis.
Some things that can be determined from a blood sample are fat in the serum, indicating the chick has been fed recently, calcium phosphorus ratios, white blood cell count indicating infection, iron levels etc. This blood will also be used for sexing the chicks as we have had to discontinue the use of the blood from the eggshell post hatching. Unfortunately, although less invasive to the chick the sample from the shell did not always provide a result and took extra time for the lab to run the tests.
Rangers need to know the sex of each chick as there is a 2 kg weight difference on average between males and females from about May until fledging in September. Supplementary feeding requirements are dependent on this information. Chick fledging is dependent on having 2 parents, so when a parent is missing the rangers take that place to ensure the chicks survival.
