Kia ora koutou (hello everyone)
Top Flat chick is now 6 days old and on the second weigh today after a feed by LGK weighs 545g. This weight will be put on the Track the chicks weight page.
It is normal for the chick’s weight to fluctuate throughout the 7.5 months prior to fledging. The graphs on the Track the Chicks weight page have been smoothed for greater clarity of viewing but the reality is that the fluctuations are greater than this.
LGL arrived this afternoon and WYL and BOK’s egg is still hatching in the Incubator Room.
Toroa chicks receive small feeds at first then they get bigger, it is very important to have the first feed from a parent. After that, regular changeovers between the parents keep everyone happy.
It is important that overall, the weight is tracking up during the guard stage so temporary fostering of a chick is an ideal option. The toroa are loyal to the nest and will accept a chick that is not their own, or even a dummy egg. This gives the ranger team greater conservation management options.
Sunny days can lead to gular fluttering in the toroa, which is a temperature control mechanism which the purpose is the same as panting in dogs. Anatomically, it is a different process.
Some gular fluttering is completely fine, and we do not turn on the irrigation system if the heat is not life threatening. Getting the nest unnecessarily wet can cause other complications such as chilled chicks or eggs, bacterial infections and attract more unwanted flies once the water is off.
There is approximately 1 km of piping to cover all the nests on Pukekura/Taiaroa Head. The spray at each nest must be turned on manually.

BOK and WYL's chick has been returned to the nest. I weighed 270g on hatching this morning.

BOK's chick needs fed this morning so the 2 chicks have been switched temporarily to achieve that naturally.
