A couple of questions: When the fledglilngs first leave their nests to explore the surroundings, do they ever have problems finding their way back to their nests? When do they "learn" that they are nocturnal and that being out during the day is not always safe?
Sharyn Broni:
There is no specific research on those questions , there will be a lot of individual differences. Hunger likely encourages the fledglings out of the burrow. Those that stay safe may survive to breed.

Today is day 13 on the nest for WYL (the dad at Top Flat Track). The egg has been taken to the incubator for safe keeping in case of desertion by WYL and a dummy egg placed in the nest. BOK may yet return, and it has happened that a deserted dummy egg will be incubated by the returning bird and normal changeovers can start up again. If WYL is still on the nest in a couple of days, he will receive fluids to keep him hydrated.

LGL has been on the nest at Top Flat for 4 days today. The changeovers at this nest have been quite regular with none over 10 days so far.

Here is a recap of recent events on Royalcam in videos.
On New Years Eve LGL came back to Top Flat to changeover the parental incubation duties. LGL and LGK are changing over quite Those nests that are not are being managed as mentioned in the Ranger’s Work for Royal Albatross page: https://www.doc.govt.nz/nat...
On the 28th December 2023 we began the second candling of each egg that is now over 50 days of age. The embryo is developing nicely in the Top Flat egg and the Top Flat Track egg is due for candling soon.
Then we woke up on New Years Day to the Little Penguin fledgling on the cam.
It is likely that that this is the little penguin/Korora’s burrow. You can see the top of the Port Otago Signal Station in the background. This area is between Upper Quarry and Top Flat so not far from the cam nests.
