A New Dawn

I made certain to be on live cam at crack of dawn this morning, as I noticed Spirit had roosted on the nest for her third night since fledging on Tuesday. I arrived at 05:00 as she was beginning her morning preparation. She did not visit the BP, as she spent most of the time either looking around the nest, or stretching and balancing on the Simba perch.
It was another precious opportunity to witness the forest awakening. The darkness turning to light as the sun began to peek through the mountains on the east. A soft hue of yellow, blue and gold. The birds arising and beginning to sound their own melodies welcoming in a brand new day .
All the while I was reminded about the rare nature of this experience, as many times when eaglets fledge there might only be a very sporadic appearance on the nest before they disperse from the natal area. It was a joy to see her doing yoga stretches, contemplating another day and taking off from the Simba branch. The season took two years of “nothing” to bring everything. As she soared off the nest and right pasted the Simba tree I was humbled and grateful for this lens into something that continues to remind me of the gift that this lens represents. It fills my heart with joy, and I can only imagine that the time Jackie and Shadow will spend over the weeks, or months ahead will be unforgettable and a gift to them for their diligence, willingness, perseverance, and will to defy what was not, for all now that now is. It’s a little past 06:00 and Spirit appears to have followed Jackie into the nest. Maybe, looking for breakfish, but that might be on the morning menu later, as I didn’t see a delivery.

I sipped my morning coffee,
staring out at the clouds.
Suddenly, and without warning,
an eagle dipped down towards the trees,
as if they just appeared from thin air.
The world faded away as I stared at that bird,
majestic in nature,
its mere presence awe-inspiring.
I wonder what it thought about as it
soared above the trees.
Some people say that the eagle’s
meaning is one of power of resilience,
that because it reaches higher than
any other bird, it’s a connection to
the Penman and the heavens above.
Others say it’s a symbol of rebirth,
of dawn, of spring’s direction,
and a renewed life.
Suddenly, and without warning,
it flies away and disappears from my view.
I sit, with my morning coffee,
warm within my hands,
full of hope, and strength, and something new.
