Kia ora koutou (hello everyone)
On Tuesday the 19th April, the Royalcam chick at Quarry Track nest is 83 days old and weighs 5.5kg. This was 600g above the previous weeks weight when she was due for a reweigh later in the week. However, increasingly regular feeding from both OGK and YRK meant that it was not necessary to rewigh this chick on Saturday. This week she is just above border line for supplementary feeding. As always we will be monitoring the parent activity and weight.

Colin is being ably assisted here by one of the Royal Albatross Centre guides who are always ready to lead us a hand.

She will have been feed around 300 to 400ml fluid with electrolytes for hydration and 400g whole fish. We use whole fish to get all the nutrients and calcium that they require. A mix of salmon and whiting is fed. Salmon is too rich on its own.

Kia ora koutou (hello everyone)
Despite YRK and OGK both making trips in to feed their chick since Tuesday when she was 5.5kg she had only gained 100g in 4 days. The stormier weather will have burnt up calories keeping her warm.
After being supplementary fed she is now 6.45kg which is very good for an 87 day old female Northern Royal.
We will keep monitoring all of the chicks weights until they fledge.

Today, Tuesday, 26th April is weigh-day for all the toroa chicks on Pukekura.
Quarry Track chick is 90 days old and weighs 6.0kg. This is 100g greater than the check-up weight on Saturday prior to supplementary feeding.
Sharyn Broni (Ranger, DOC) Šis ir Rubija Fenvika (Ruby Fenwick) no Predator Free NZ emuāra, kurā daži no mums bija ieguldījuši ieguldījumu. Sharyn Broni (Ranger, DOC) This is a Blog by Ruby Fenwick from Predator Free NZ that a couple of us had input for. A bit of history and overview of the management of the colony.
Also just published by ACAP (Agreement on the Conservation of Albatross and Petrels) is this article by Chris Robertson regarding the Chatham Albatross. As Chris was the research manager for the Northern Royal Albatross at Pukekura/ Taiaroa Head there is some background information on past conservation here, particularly from 1968 through to 2000. The breeding population fledged 5 chicks in 1968 and 12 in 2000, a very much smaller population than we have today.[
