2-26-21 Day Trip to Decorah

I had the afternoon off for an appointment on Friday, so decided to make a quick trip to Decorah to see what Mom and DM2 were up to. I figured if we had eggs there would be somebirdy there. If not, I would be watching an empty nest.
When I got to N3, I didn’t see anybody. I wasn’t sure if I was happy about that or not! I took a few pictures of the nest, and waited. I looked at my picture on my camera and zoomed way in. WAIT... There was a beak sticking out from one of the trunks! So I changed my position to get a different perspective, and saw somebirdy laying in the nest! I believe it was Mom, which was confirmed a couple of minutes later, when DM2 flew into the nest with some grasses. Mom stood up and flew to a nearby branch.
DM2 moved some grasses, but I noticed both parents were very alert. All of a sudden Mom and then DM2 started calling out. I looked up and an adult eagle flew into the area. Mom flew off after the eagle and DM2 followed. They both escorted the eagle out of the area. After a couple of minutes, DM2 flew back in and laid down in the nest. A few minutes later, Mom flew in with some more nesting material. Mom stayed on the nest, while DM2 flew in and out a few times. Mom stood on the nest for a long time. Eventually she put her head down, and looked like she could have moved some nesting materials and then rolled an egg, and then she laid down. She was fairly alert and was looking around. I stayed about 20 more minutes or so, and then had to leave. It sure looked like Mom and DM2 were incubating at least 1 egg.
As I was driving home, I was wondering how many eggs mom has laid already. I hope she will lay three again this year, but unfortunately we won’t know until we see the little bobbleheads peeking over the edge. I did ask her while I was there, but she wouldn’t answer me…if only I could get Mom and DM2 to answer my texts!!

While we can't give an egg-laying date and time like we usually do, we believe Mom laid egg number one on Wednesday or Thursday evening, based on Robin's Friday observation and reports from Scott Iverson and Dave Kester. We'll miss watching them this year, but we wish both of them the best of luck and we'll continue to report as we can. After some discussion about what to call the new nest, we went with N3, since three comes after two.]

4-18-21 ~ Day Trip to Decorah: Yay, Yay, Yay!!!

I went to Decorah today. I know it is only two weeks since the hatch, and wasn’t expecting to be able to see the eaglets yet, but since it was a nice day and I decided to take a chance and just check.

When I got there, DM2 was on the nest. I couldn’t see any eaglets, but it looked like things were pretty quiet. I waited quite a while and saw DM2 looking down. I zoomed in and there was an eaglet sitting upright in front of DM2. Yay! I snapped a few more photos … wait ... another eaglet!! Yay, Yay!! … 2 bobbleheads! DM2 got up and started to feed. Looking through my binoculars I scanned the nest for little eaglet heads. DM2 kept feeding, one, two, hmmm is that a third one? I couldn’t tell. DM2 settled into the nest and things were quiet again.

After a little while, Mom flew into the nest, and DM2 flew off to the dead tree nearby. A few minutes later mom looked down and I could see eaglets in front of her. I took a photo and looked at it, and saw 3 bobbleheads!! Yay, Yay, YAY!!! Mom got up and began feeding, then settled back down in the nest. I watched and waited and after a short time, she called out and then flew off the nest. That must have been her "taking a short fly-about break" message, because within a few minutes DM2 flew to the nearby dead tree, preened a bit, and then flew to the nest. I wished I could have stayed longer and gotten elebenty billion more photos, but it was getting cloudier, the breeze was picking up, and I needed to head home. I looked around (to make sure no one was nearby) and then I said in my loudest whisper voice, “Way to go Mom and DM2 ... Congrats!!” I then said my goodbyes to them and Decorah’s newest trio … D37, D38 & D39. I promise to be back soon!

Decorah Eagles - May 17, 2021
It was our first morning in Decorah after stopping by at N2B and the Fish Hatchery we headed over to the New Nest, N3! We were there for quite awhile and saw Mom, DM2, D37, D38 & D39 from a distance! Way to far for my camera lens to get a picture of any quality but enough to show you our Very Much Loved Decorah Family ❤ Mom and DM2 were coming and going and the Kids were very active! Oh! How I wish we could see them up close! ❤ But Who knows! Maybe Mom will bring them over to N2B and the Fish Hatchery after they fledge to visit!! Wouldn't that be something?? You never know!!! Have a Great Evening Everyone! Remember don't let anyone take away your happy!

6-19-21 Day Trip

I decided to go to Decorah on Saturday, so I got up at dark O'clock, and off I went! The oldest eaglet, D37, should be about 76 days old (give or take a day or two), and within the fledge window. Although I wasn’t really expecting to see a fledge, I was hoping to at least see some branching or hovering.
When I got to the nest, there was a parent on the perch tree next to the nest tree, and one of the eaglets was on a branch several feet above the nest. Hmmm, it looks like we have a brancher!! Another eaglet looked like it was eating something, and the third one was watching. There was a flurry of wing flapping and then they must have worn themselves out because they all took a little nap.
The eaglets finally woke up again and did some more wingercising. One eaglet flapped it’s wings, and flap-hopped onto the side branch where the parents often perch. All of a sudden I saw a parent flying around above the nest. It circled around the area and flew into the nest. I saw a lot of wings, and then the parent hopped to the side branch. I zoomed in on the parent and saw that it was DM2. The eaglets started wingercising again and as DM2 was watching, one of them hovered several feet above the nest! That was really fun to see, and I’m really glad it was in the center of the nest when it hovered!! (Not that I was worried or anything, lol) DM2 then flew over to the perch branch and Mom flew off.
There was a bunch more wingercising by the eaglets and a lot of standing along the rails and watching the parents. A little bit later, Mom flew into the nest. All the eaglets were bent over so I assume she brought food with her. Mom stayed on the nest for a long time. Every once in a while she would bend over like she was watching to see if the eaglets needed any help unzipping the prey. Finally she flew to the left side branch, and then flew to the perch tree next to DM2. I could hear them vocalizing when she flew over there. The eaglets did a little more flapping and hopping and then stood at the side rail watching the parents. I wonder if the eaglets were squeeing at the parents the whole time they were watching them, lol.
Finally it was starting to get hot and I decided to head home. It was an excellent eagle watching day. I got to see some branching and an awesome hover! On the way home I wondered if one, two or all the eaglets were branching to that branch above the nest, or to the right branch of the tree. It’s too bad they weren’t wearing their name tags! Maybe the next time I go, somebirdy will fledge!

Es nolēmu sestdien doties uz Dekoru, tāpēc es piecēlos tumsā un devos prom! Vecākajam ērglim D37 jābūt apmēram 76 dienas vecam, un tas gatavs izlidot kuru katru dienu. Lai gan es īsti nebiju gaidījis, ka redzēšu izlidošanu, es cerēju vismaz ieraudzīt zarošanu vai lidināšanos.
Kad es nonācu ligzdā, blakus ligzdas kokam bija vecāks, un viens no ērgļiem atradās uz zara vairākas pēdas virs ligzdas. Hmmm, izskatās, ka mums ir zarošana!! Vēl viens ērglis izskatījās, ka tas kaut ko ēd, un trešais skatījās. Bija spārnu treniņi, un tad viņi droši vien bija noguruši, jo visi nedaudz snauda.
Ērgļi beidzot atkal pamodās un vēl nedaudz vingroja. Pēkšņi es redzēju vecākus lidojam apkārt virs ligzdas. Tas riņķoja pa apkārtni un ielidoja ligzdā. Es pietuvināju vecāku un redzēju, ka tas ir DM2. Ērgļi atkal sāka vicināt spārnus un, DM2 vērojot, viens no viņiem lidinājās vairākas pēdas virs ligzdas! Tas bija patiešām jautri un es priecājos, ka tas atradās ligzdas centrā, kad tas lidinājās !! (Ne jau tas, ka es būtu noraizējies vai kas tāds, lol) DM2 pēc tam pārlidoja uz zaru, un mamma aizlidoja.
Nedaudz vēlāk mamma lidoja ligzdā. Visi ērgļi bija noliekušies, tāpēc es pieņemu, ka viņa nesa sev līdzi ēdienu. Mamma ilgi atradās ligzdā. Ik pa brīdim viņa pieliecās, it kā vērotu, vai ērgļiem ir nepieciešama palīdzība ar medījumu. Visbeidzot viņa aizlidoja uz kreiso sānu zaru un pēc tam aizlidoja blakus DM2.
Beidzot gaiss sāka sakarst, un es nolēmu doties mājās. Tā bija lieliska ērgļu vērošanas diena. Man nācās redzēt dažus zarojumus un lielisku lidināšanos! Mājup ejot, es prātoju, vai viens, divi vai visi ērgļi zaro uz to zaru virs ligzdas vai uz koka labo zaru. Ir ļoti slikti, ka viņi nebija uzvilkuši savas vārdu zīmes! Varbūt nākamajā reizē, kad aiziešu, kāda putniņš aizlidos!
