Hi all, GLY, a parent from a nest near the Royalcam nest (but not in view of the observatory) fed the Royalcam chick, then fed their own chick. Unusual, but not unheard of, for a parent to feed a chick that is not their own chick.
Labvakar! Paldies, tiešām ļoti interesanti, ka arī šādi notiek. Tik cilvēcīgi!Raganiete wrote: ↑13 Mar 2019 10:08 Labdien!

Kia Ora,
Today the Royalcam chick is 55 days old and weighs 4.3kg. This is up 800g since last week which is a healthy weight gain. The older chicks, such as the Royalcam chick are now capable of taking small trips of the nest but are not going too far, as yet.
LKL (the inquisitive new dad from the Quarry nest, not too far away) is feeding his chick very well and coming and going frequently. The albatross travel far and wide to find food which is not all at the same location. His nest is in a very sheltered location and he needs to land and take off from a windier spot which is why we have seen him so frequently on the Royalcam. I have also observed him investigating the other chicks that he goes past.
The chicks are becoming quite robust now and are mostly coping well with the non-breeders.

Kia Ora
Today the Royalcam chick is 62 days old and weighs 4.25kg. This is very slightly down on last week when the weight was well above average for the age of a female chick. Scroll down for pictures of LGL (mum) feeding her chick around 12.19pm today. It is possible that we missed sighting the last sighting of LGL due to the live stream being down. Alternatively, she has been away for longer searching for food for herself and her chick. The timing between parental visits can vary if food is not available where they are searching. It is one reason why an albatross chick needs to be raised by two parents.
Albatross moult gradually, replacing a few feathers at a time so that they can maintain good flying condition.
