Releasing SE 21 back home
At last a fine day. Finally after several attempts, due to wet and stormy weather, the juvenile White-bellied Sea-Eagle SE21 was released “back home” to her natal territory. After a long car trip in a padded box, she flew strongly out of the box when it was carefully opened. She then flew straight to a tree in the Nature Reserve, not far from her nest. As the release team left, to leave her in peace, she was sitting on a high branch, recovering from her trip.
She has been in care for over 17 weeks, so it was a thrill to see her finally released to the wild. It is expected that her parents will accept her in the nest area again. Hopefully her innate hunting ability will mean she is able to find prey. She was flying about the Reserve forest and even over the nearby Parramatta River before her accident.
In late November, the young eagle fell and was trapped below the nest, hanging by one wing. Her initial rescue and care would not have been possible without the wonderful team from Feathered Friends. She was rescued by Cassandra, Renee and Kane from Feathered Friends, escorted by Judy from EagleCAM (with local knowledge and for approved access to the Nature Reserve forest). Her wing was not broken, but had a serious wound and tissue damage. SE21 received several weeks of intensive support and care at the Feathered Friends Sanctuary. A Trichomonas infection and injuries were treated under veterinary supervision.
When she was determined well enough, she was transported to Higher Grounds Raptor Centre, for continuing rehabilitation. Healing of her severely injured wing progressed under the care of Peggy. She was able to gain strength and mobility in the large Flight Centre. She continued to gain life skills in Peggy’s care.
Survival of our fledgling is due to the care and support of a wonderful team of raptor enthusiasts and friends. Thank you Ravi and Peggy and your teams.
