Black Eagle Project Roodekrans
Dear Raptorphiles,
As discussed with Gerald last night, for all intends and purposes, we can ‘safely’ assume that the first egg was laid on 29/30 April and the second 3/4 May. Once the eggs hatch, will one be able to assess a more precise date, taking into account that incubation is 44/45 days.
Hatching of the 1st egg is estimated to be on 11/12 June and the 2nd on 14/15 June. We have to keep in mind that at Roodekrans about 90% of the time, the first laid egg was recorded during late afternoon/early evening…about 6 o’clock or there about…the second laying is a bit more difficult in that this is not necessarily during a similar evening time slot.
We must also keep in mind that the eagles have experienced numerous incidences of addled (unfertilized) eggs as well as zero hatchings such as the recent second breeding attempt. This will have to be monitored intensively during the hatching periods to determine which of the two hatched first!
I’d like to stick my neck out and guess the fledging time…but that may just be a tad premature – let’s just keep our fingers crossed that this is a normal breeding season.
Thanks to Garth Heydenrych for an exquisite photo…we are certainly looking forward to many more!
Eagle greetings
