Every year conservationists receive information about injured, exhausted or otherwise unfit to fly large raptors – the sea eagle, golden eagle, lesser spotted eagle, buzzard, hawk, owl etc. Many of them are rare and specially protected species. Upon receiving proper care, they can return to the wild. Unfortunately, at present there is no such rehabilitation center in Latvia. The only place where lonely birds may provide assistance is the Riga Zoo. However the large distances involved in most cases is not possible in advance to help.
Dr. U.Bergmanis one of the leading researchers of lesser spotted eagles in Latvia and Europe and association "Association for Environmental Management" Medņuriests "" founder started to build the first rehabilitation center for raptors in the Eastern Latvia countryside. It will be located alongside lesser spotted eagle research plot at the homestead "Tiltakalni" Madona region. Initially he planned to build a bird cage or three different species recovery.
