Good morning everyone,
Hope you're all well and enjoying seeing the wee chick grow and explore.
Webcam chick weighed in at 5.9kg today. Down from last week but still a hefty bird! Maybe she’s running herself slim...
As she’s slightly below average, Sharyn and I will be giving her a feed today. Keep an eye out early this afternoon.
I’ve noticed similar questions keep arising about the webcam chick’s exploratory behaviour. To quickly answer your questions: out of all this season’s chicks, the webcam chick has explored the most (>20m from the nest!).
As the chicks grow they express more and more behaviours. Some chicks explore widely - others barely move. Some are aggressive – others are calm. These differences between individuals’ behaviour are known to scientists as ‘animal personalities’.
Animals show personalities akin to humans. We’ve found ‘personalities’ in birds, mammals, reptiles, and fish (my Master’s degree was on fish personality and its implications). Even spiders are known to show individual personalities. Animal personalities are usually described using four behaviours:
• risk taking (bold to shy),
• activity level (active to inactive),
• aggression (aggressive to passive),
• and the one you’ve all noticed, neophobia (their tendency to explore).
Where do you think this webcam chick would lie on these four behaviours?
