YWK

Hi everyone, thank you for your continued support. We have complied a list of FAQ's and answers.
Q: Was the chick ill?
A: As far as we know there was nothing wrong with the chick. It was putting on weight as normal and displaying normal behaviours. From what our ranger saw beforehand on Sunday there was nothing to indicate it was ill.
Q: What will happen to KGY and YWK?
A: KGY has already abandoned the empty nest and when YWK returns he won’t stick around for too long when he notices the nest is empty. Because the chick was still quite young, it is possible that this pair will return next year to attempt to breed again.
Q: Was the chick blinded?
A: We are unable to determine if the chick had impaired eyesight.
Q: Will the camera be moved to another nest?
A: We’re considering the feasibility of moving the camera to another nest if the disturbance can be kept to a minimum.

DOC pārvalda albatrosu koloniju, saņemot atbalstu no Otago pussalas tresta, Te Poari a Pukekura (Pukekura kopības pārvaldības) un Dunedinas pilsētas domes. Kolonija ir pieaugusi no viena vaislas pāra 1937. gadā līdz apmēram 65 pāriem 2017. gadā.
Pukekuras / Taiaroas albatrosu kolonija ir vienīgā kontinentālā vieta pasaulē, lai apskatītu ziemeļu karaļa albatrosu savā dabiskajā vidē.

Department of Conservation Mod
Hi all,
We are testing the feasibility of moving the camera to another nest, however this is not without its challenges. The birds are about to go into post-guard stage where the adults leave the chicks for the first time so any action moving the camera needs to be done very carefully. To allow us to do this and negate any disturbance to the birds we will be switching the camera off at the end of today. It is likely to remain off for up to a week as we monitor the impact of any move.
I hope you are all okay after Sunday’s incident. Thank you for all the goodwill messages of support to the team here. It was an extremely rare event and while the circumstances were truly tragic, losing animals is the reality of conservation.
