Three weeks ago we tried to catch osprey Ilmar to remove the non-functioning transmitter from his back, but we did not succeed. Now in the night of Aug 9th (when it was +24 degrees warm) we made another try and succeeded in catching Ilmar. How this was done in principle can be seen in Jürgen's pictures in the forum:

The transmitter on Ilmar's back went silent already in May when there were first eggs and then chicks in the nest, so we did not want to interefe with the nestlife then. Now the ospreylets can already fly and the time is more convinient to catch the parent. Bigger chicks don't suffer if they are not brought fish for many hours. Ilmar was caught and released in the morning, and he brought fish again to the nest before night. In the following days the ordinary supply of fish has continued normally.

The dark colour of feathers which had been covered by the transmitter was worn out. The transmitter had replaced the function of the outer cover feathers in a way. Probably the white spot on Ilmar's back will disappear when old feathers will be replaced by new ones. Hopefully we shall see whether this happens next year on the web camera. We examined thoroughly the feathers and skin under the transmitter but found no damage. The plastic cover of the transmitter itself was rather ragged and certainly not waterproof.
Ilmar was not given a new transmitter because almost a year of his life has already been followed. Maybe after some years we may consider harnessing him with a new transmitter.
Veterinarian Madis Leivits examined Ilmar and concluded that the physical condition of the bird was surprisingly good considering the present stage of life (feeding chicks). On the basis of the thickness of grease layer on the bird one might think that it had no chicks to take care of this year.
We replaced the plastic ring U6 on Ilmar's left ankle with a new ring which should be more resistant to ultra-violet radiation. Now Ilmar is wearing on his left leg a black ring with a white stripe and the code
AF. The right ring remains the same as before (ESTONIA MATSALU A-10137).
