Unexploded shell closes penguin and albatross colonies.
An unexploded shell has been uncovered by penguin burrowing at Pilots Beach next to the Royal Albatross Colony at Dunedin’s Taiaroa Head.
Experts are amazed that staff and birds had not triggered the deadly shell and a complete sweep of the headland is under way to uncover any other rusting ordinance. A ten kilometre safety zone has been set up and all areas within are being evacuated, including areas on the other side of the harbor, Aramoana and surrounding areas.
Royal Albatross Centre Manager of Operations, Hoani Langsbury says “This is a shock to us all as there are over 100,000 visitors to the headland each year who might have triggered the shell at any moment. We believe it came from the 1886 Armstrong Disappearing Gun as it was fired here over 400 times. We hope that the sweep is completed by noon today, so our operations can continue as normal”.
Last year another unexploded shell from the 1886 Armstrong Disappearing Gun was found and disposed of by the bomb disposal unit from Christchurch. Taiaroa Head was used as a military base with Fort Taiaroa in service until 1945.

Nesprādzis šāviņš ir atrasts pludmalē blakus Karaliskajam Albatrosu centra pie Taiaroa raga.
Taiaroa rags tika izmantots kā militārā bāze līdz 1945. gadam.
