First toroa back for the 2026/27 breeding season at Pukekura



It takes some careful observation to notice that one of these birds is not quite like the other. Sure, they are both Northern Royal Albatross at Pukekura and both have the pale bill of a toroa that is not feeding a chick. However, the one at the back is a chick, it still has wispy bits of down on the feathers. The bird at the front is sleek, well rounded and has no down at all. The yellow band indicates she is a female and although we cannot see it in the image this is A50. All the chicks this season have F as the letter on their alphanumeric band.

At 8 years of age and having just arrived back from a winter off the coast of South America, A50 is the first toroa back to start the 2026/27 breeding season. A50 hasn’t bred yet, breeding starts at an average of 8 years of age, but she has been looking for a mate over the past 3 seasons. Only time will tell if she breeds during the 2026/27 season. With only one bird back so far, it will be a several weeks before all the breeders have arrived from their year off.

Bells will be rung at 1pm tomorrow Friday 25th September and to celebrate the arrival of the first toroa for te 2026/27 breeding season.
