This year's competition theme was habitat restoration.

Species such as kōkihi or New Zealand spinach (Tetragonia tetragonioides) and the native New Zealand ice plant (Disphyma australe), also known as Horokaka have regenerated on the headland following the removal of possums and rabbits. Native tree plantings are helping restore degraded areas of the headland outside the Nature Reserve.
Āwheo hatched on the 22nd of January 2026 and is now 159 days old (30th June) average fledging age is 240 days.
Āwheo was last weighed on the 23rd of June, he was well over average weight at 11.2kg. The average weight for day 159 is 9.9kg so he is doing very well with regular feeds from both parents. He is one of the heaviest chicks out of the 39 chicks. The next weigh day will be the 7th of July.

WYL’s GPS update: WYL has been in to feed Āwheo 3 times since last Tuesday, he has mainly been foraging in a northerly direction off the Otago coast but more recently headed further north off the Canterbury coast.
BOK’s GPS update: BOK has been back to feed Āwheo once since last Tuesday; she has mainly foraged north and east of Pukekur
2025/26 season update
A record 40 chicks hatched this season; however, one 2-day old chick has died leaving 39 chicks to manage. There are 17 females and 22 males. This was determined by testing a small blood sample. It is important to know the sex of each chick in case supplementary feeding is required. Monitoring each chick’s weight is now the big task until fledging in September. Chicks that are thriving will only be weighed every second week so this will bring down the top weight every second week. Current weights are ranging from 6.7 to 11.8kg and the lightest three are receiving regular supplementary feeds. Weights will level out from now on until dropping prior to fledging in September.
