14.augustā Āwheo tiks uzlikts tērauda gredzens un viņš saņems pirmo vakcināciju pret putnu gripu.

Āwheo hatched on the 22nd of January 2026 and is now 201days old (11th August), average fledging age is 240 days. He was banded F71 on the 18th of July, stainless-steel banding will be done this Friday.

Āwheo was last weighed on the 6th of August, he was11kg. The average weight for day 201 is 10.3kg so is weight is fine. He has been fed 6 times since the 6th of August. The average weights have levelled out and will start to drop in the next month as is normal prior to fledging. The next weigh day will be the 18th of August, see below for more information regarding ranger work on the 14th of August.

2025/26 season update

A record 40 chicks hatched this season; however, one 2-day old chick has died leaving 39 chicks to manage. There are 17 females and 22 males. This was determined by testing a small blood sample. It is important to know the sex of each chick in case supplementary feeding is required. Monitoring each chick’s weight is now the big task until fledging in September. Chicks that are thriving will only be weighed every second week so this will bring down the top weight every second week. Current weights are ranging from 7to 12.4kg and the lightest six are receiving regular supplementary feeds. Weights will level out from now on until dropping prior to fledging in September.

All chicks have now received their alphanumeric bands as they become more mobile and start moving away from the nest to prepare for their first flight. Banding of Stainless-Steel bands and any remaining alphanumeric bands will occur on Friday 14th August. At this time, to reduce handling, this season’s chick cohort will receive their first HPAI vaccination as part of DOC’s rollout of the 23 species in tranche 2 of the vaccination programme. The vaccinations will be carried out by Wildlife Hospital vets. A second dose will be given prior to fledging.
