Video opens with the male Great Horned Owl arriving on the attic branch of M15 and F23's nest tree. He looks around, watching the area. The male drops to the porch branch/nest side, then hops to the nest. The female arrives out of view close by, hooting, and startling the male with her arrival. Silent flight even gets the owls! The owls duet, and the male checks out the nest, digging/scratching. Watch his feet as he "works". The male moves back up to the attic, then leaves.

The female is still hooting close by, and CamOps finds her on the veranda. CamOps provides close views of the female as she hoots, watches the area, and preens/grooms her feet. The female moves lower on the veranda, then drops to the nest. She bites at sticks in the nest, and also slightly moves smaller sticks. (My Cam2 recording of her nest time was compromised, so I only included the Cam1 footage.) The female leaves cam view, still hooting close by. Time stamps below, if interested. What to Expect with the Great Horned Owls visiting: We will have to watch and see. Owls do not build nests. They take over the nests of other birds (eagles, hawks, osprey, herons), and use a variety of other spots to nest. This is the owl's territory also. Eagles and Owls exclude their own species, but not one another, from territory. The owls are scouting nesting locations while in their courting period. Owls have been here since Season 1 when the cams first went live, so we will probably see the same behaviors as in the past. The owls will visit the nest, and the male will likely bring food gifts for the female, as he did last season.

Will the owls try to take over the nest? That is a possibility, or they may choose a different nesting location. The eagles and owls are aware of each other. We watched M15 last season fly to the nest late at night and stay in it (or the nest tree). We shall see if he does the same this season, and if so, it will likely be closer to egg laying time when he starts. Whoever lays their eggs first will likely keep the nest. The eagles may try to remove the female owl if she lays eggs. It is a dangerous fight for all of them. Eagles are more likely to build another nest if they lose their nest or nest tree. The owls will find another nesting site if F23 starts incubation. F23 was first to lay eggs last season, with the owls starting incubation shortly after in the N2 nest in the W pasture. The N2 nest is no longer there. The owls will not be captured and moved, as some have asked about. The owls are formidable birds; however, an intruder eagle is a far more dangerous bird, IMO. The top reasons eagles go into care or perish are human caused issues: vehicle strikes, power line strikes, poisoning (lead, rodenticide, etc.). Fights with other eagles are far more common than fights with owls. Please try to keep perspective, and try not to worry about things that have not happened. I pray for a safe and successful season for all of the birds nesting on the Pritchett farm.

Tēviņš nokrīt uz lieveņa zara/ligzdas pusi, tad uzlec uz ligzdu. Mātīte ierodas ārpus redzesloka tuvumā, kliedz un pārsteidz tēviņu ar savu ierašanos. Klusais lidojums pat saņem pūces! Pūču duets, un tēviņš pārbauda ligzdu, rok/kasās. Vērojiet viņa kājas, kā viņš "strādā". Tēviņš pārceļas atpakaļ uz bēniņiem, tad aiziet.

Mātīte joprojām bļaustās tuvumā, un CamOps atrod viņu verandā. CamOps nodrošina mātītes tuvus skatus, kad viņa ārdās, vēro apkārtni un kopj/kopj kājas. Mātīte verandā pārvietojas zemāk, pēc tam nokrīt uz ligzdu. Viņa kož pie kociņiem ligzdā, kā arī nedaudz kustina mazākus kociņus. Ko sagaidīt, viesojoties lielajām ragainām pūcēm: būs jāskatās un jāredz. Pūces ligzdas nebūvē. Viņi pārņem citu putnu (ērgļu, vanagu, zivjērgļu, gārņu) ligzdas un ligzdošanai izmanto dažādas citas vietas. Šī ir arī pūces teritorija. Ērgļi un pūces izslēdz no teritorijas savas sugas, bet ne viens otru. Pūces izlūko ligzdošanas vietas, kamēr tās atrodas piemājas periodā. Pūces šeit ir bijušas kopš 1. sezonas, kad kameras pirmo reizi sāka darboties, tāpēc mēs, iespējams, redzēsim tādu pašu uzvedību kā pagātnē. Pūces apmeklēs ligzdu, un tēviņš, iespējams, nesīs mātītei barības dāvanas, kā to darīja pagājušajā sezonā.

Vai pūces mēģinās pārņemt ligzdu? Tā ir iespēja, vai arī viņi var izvēlēties citu ligzdošanas vietu. Ērgļi un pūces apzinās viens otru. Mēs skatījāmies, ka M15 pagājušajā sezonā vēlu vakarā lidoja uz ligzdu un paliek tajā (vai ligzdas kokā). Redzēsim, vai viņš šosezon darīs to pašu, un, ja tā, tad, visticamāk, tas būs tuvāk olu dēšanas laikam, kad viņš sāks. Tas, kurš pirmais izdēj olas, visticamāk, paturēs ligzdu. Ērgļi var mēģināt izņemt pūces mātīti, ja tā dēj olas. Viņiem visiem tā ir bīstama cīņa. Ērgļi, visticamāk, būvēs citu ligzdu, ja pazaudē savu ligzdu vai ligzdas koku. Pūces atradīs citu ligzdošanas vietu, ja F23 sāks inkubāciju. F23 bija pirmais, kas dēja olas pagājušajā sezonā, un pūces neilgi pēc tam sāka inkubāciju N2 ligzdā R ganībās. N2 ligzdas vairs nav. Pūces netiks notvertas un pārvietotas, par ko daži ir jautājuši. Pūces ir milzīgi putni; tomēr iebrucējs ērglis ir daudz bīstamāks putns, IMO. Galvenie iemesli, kāpēc ērgļi nonāk aprūpē vai iet bojā, ir cilvēku izraisītas problēmas: transportlīdzekļu streika, elektrolīnijas streika, saindēšanās (svins, rodenticīdi utt.). Cīņas ar citiem ērgļiem ir daudz biežākas nekā cīņas ar pūcēm. Lūdzu, mēģiniet saglabāt perspektīvu un neuztraucieties par lietām, kas nav notikušas. Es lūdzu par drošu un veiksmīgu sezonu visiem Pritchett fermā ligzdojošajiem putniem.
