Uzmanību, čūska! Un joprojām dzīva - savā veidā...
Pirms dažām dienām īspirkstu ērgļiem bija vēl viena veiksmīga diena savā ligzdā, kur viņi baudīja divas lielās čūskas (Dolichophis jugularis) un vienu garšīgu un ļoti indīgu palestīniešu odzi (Vipra palaestinae) - filmā laika kods 01:40. Patiesībā šī ir otrā reize, kad ligzdas mazulis nogaršo palestīniešu odzi. Lai vai kā, pēc čūskas izvilkšanas no tēviņa mutes, Odze nedaudz “pamodās” un sāka kustēties ligzdā, bet mazais to viegli pārspēja un norija pilnībā!
Un kā klājas mazajam ērglēnam? Nu... tam mazajam čūsku rijējam jau ir 60 dienas, un tagad var droši teikt, ka tas ir viņš.

A few days ago the Short-toed Eagles had another successful day in their nest where they enjoyed two Large Whip Snakes (Dolichophis jugularis) and a single tasty and highly poisonous Palestinian Viper (Vipra palaestinae) - time code 01:40 in the movie. As a matter of fact, this is the second time that the nestling get to taste a Palestinian Viper it was us who fail to upsate you about it. Sorry about that. Anyhow, after extricating the snake from the male’s mouth, the Viper “woke up” a little and started moving in the nest but the nestling overpowered it easily and swallowed it fully!
And how is the nestling? Well… this cute snake gluttonous is already 60 days old and it’s safe to say now that it’s a he.

Viņš ir liels un spēcīgs un drīz būs gatavs pamest ligzdu. Viņa dienas lielākā daļa ir veltīta spārnu treniņiem un pacietīgai ēdiena gaidīšanai. Un dažreiz uzticīgie vecāki pārcenšas - tas ir liels laiks. 8. maijā ligzdā tika atnestas divas gigantiskas čūskas (Dolichophis jugularis). Tik garas/lielas, ka vecākiem bija grūti tās izvilkt... Traki.

Stuck in the throat!
What do you do if a huge Large Whip Snake is stuck in the throat? You pull, and pull some more, and pull harder… until it comes out! The Short-toed Eagle’s nestling is 69 days old already. He is big and strong and will be ready to fledge soon. Most of his day is dedicated to flying practice and waiting patiently for food. And sometimes the devoted parents supersize him - big time. On May 8th two gigantic Large Whip Snakes (Dolichophis jugularis) were brought to the nest. Both of them were so long/big that the parents had some hard time pulling them out… Crazy.

Top Israel’i nature show - two of our online talents in one powerful frame. Say what? Yes, we know it’s insane… let us explain.
The Short-toed Eagle nestling is already 75 days old and about to leave the nest any day now. It is also important to avoid premature fledging - a scenario that almost took place today’s morning when a young Bonelli’s Eagle arrived at the Short-toed Eagles territory. The young Bonelli’s Eagle attacked the nestling - almost throwing him out of the nest! No doubt the nestling deserves some compliments after standing still in his post, waiting patiently for the intruder to move on (or get lost…). Amazing!
But what’s more amazing is the fact that this young Bonelli’s Eagle fledged this spring, in Samaria, and he even carries a satellite tag on his back - just like the Bonelli’s Eagles in our nestcam project!
Satellite transmitters are being attached to the Critically Endangered young Bonelli’s by the Israel’s Park and Nature Authority devoted staff, led by ecologist Ohad Hatzofe and his dream team - Ygal Miler, Asaf Mayrose, Walter Neser and other great people who wish to prevent the extinction of this majestic bird of prey. And to meet one of these birds through our cameras - it’s a true privilege.

18.08. Beidzot... Čūskērglēns izlidoja!
Īspirkstu ērgļa mazulis atstāja ligzdu, un mēs guvām gandarījumu. Pēc trīs gadu drāmām, emocijām un neveiksmēm īspirkstu ērgļu teritorija nodrošina vērtīgu jaunu un spēcīgu mazuli.
Parunāsim par vēsturi…
Mūsu 5.apraides sezonā (2020. gadā) īspirkstu ērgļa tēviņš guva elektrības šoku un nomira Izraēlas savvaļas dzīvnieku slimnīcā. Nevarējām atraut acis no ekrāna, mēs visi vērojām, kā mātīte izmisīgi sauca savu dzīvesbiedru, turpināja inkubēt vēl dažas dienas, līdz pameta savu olu (atstājot to vietējai izsalkušajai caunai) un teritoriju - lai dotos uz dienvidiem, uz Āfriku.
2021. gada sezona sākās ar jautājuma zīmēm... Vai teritoriju atkal ieņems mūsu mātīte? Un ja tā.. Vai viņai būs dzīvesbiedrs? 2021. gada 2. martā viņa tika dokumentēta, stāvot uz vienas no potenciālajām teritorijas ligzdām. Viņa gaidīja apmēram nedēļu, līdz uzradās kāds smalks pieaudzis tēviņš, kurš bildināja viņu. Pāris uzcēla jaunu ligzdu, tika izdēta ola un viss izskatījās lieliski, līdz... Teritorijā parādījās jauns tēviņš - jauns, pārgalvīgs un apņēmības pilns! Teritorija, sieviete, viss! Cīņa starp abiem traģiski beidzās ar saimnieka nāvi. Atkal visi palikām mēmi – skatoties, kā čūskērgļu atraitne 2.gadu pēc kārtas atkal pamet savu olu caunas asajiem zobiem un lielajai apetītei...
Ievainots, bet uzvarējis, jaunais tēviņš sāka mātīti bildināt, liekot pamatus jaunai ligzdai, taču bija jau par vēlu - vairošanās sezona bija beigusies un nācās samierināties ar kārtējo neveiksmi.
Pagāja vēl viena ziema (Āfrikā), un tad pienāca 2022. gada vairošanās sezona, kas mums parādīja, ka dabai ir savi noteikumi. 2.martā (atkal…) pirmais ieradās ērgļu tēviņš - tas bija pagājušā gada jaunais tēviņš - "slepkava"... Viņš gaidīja teritorijā gandrīz 2 nedēļas, līdz pēkšņi ieradās arī viņa. Vai varam noticēt? 7.reizi atgriežas vairoties savā iecienītajā teritorijā!
Jaunais tēviņš neatlaidīgi lenca mātīti, abi kopā uzbūvēja jaunu ligzdu un visbeidzot 16.aprīlī mātīte izdēja olu – baltu kā sniegs, dzīvības pilnu, mūsu dārgumu. Inkubācija ilga 47 dienas un beigu beigās 2.jūnijā notika šķilšanās, piepildot mūsu sirdis ar cerību.
Laiks pagāja, uzticīgie vecāki uzstājās labi, jo īpaši jaunais tēviņš kļuva par supermednieku, nodrošinot ligzdā 2-5 čūskas dienā – pārsteidzoši! Pagājušā nedēļa bija ļoti noslogota ar lielu aizrautību un lidošanas praksi, kas lika mums domāt, ka lidošana notiks jebkurā brīdī. Taču ligzdas mazulim bija citi plāni, nedaudz uzkavēties un izbaudīt vēl vienu Melno pātagas čūsku un palestīniešu odzi – kur jāsteidzas? Visbeidzot, 77 dienu vecumā, ligzdas mazulis izlidoja un abi vecāki turpina rūpēties par viņu. Šīs dienas var būt arī bīstamas... Mūsu mazo ērgli sagaida daudzi apdraudējumi, īpaši plēsēji. Turklāt rudens migrācija ir tepat aiz stūra, un nav laika kavēties – medību prasmju uzlabošanai, stiprināšanai, lai sagatavotos smagajam ceļojumam uz dienvidiem.

At last… Fledging in the Short-toed Eagle territory!
The Short-toed Eagl’s nestling left the nest and we got to have a sweet closer. After three years of dramas, emotions and failures the Short-toed Eagles territory provides the goods - a precious young and strong fledgling.
Let's talk about some history…
During our fifth broadcasting season (2020) the male Short-toed Eagle got electrocuted and died in the Israeli Wildlife Hospital. Couldn't take our eyes off the screen we all watched the female calling her mate desperately, keep on incubating for a few more days until abandoning her egg (leaving it to the local hungry Beech Marten) and the territory - south, to Africa.
Breeding season of 2021 started with question marks… Will the territory be occupied again by our female? And if so.. Will she get to have a proper mate? On March the 2nd 2021 she was documented standing on one of the territory’s potential nests. She waited for a week or so, until a fine adult male showed up, courting after her successfully. The fresh couple built a new nest, an egg was laid and everything looked great until… A new male appeared at the territory - young, reckless and determined to take over! The territory, the female, everything! The battle between the two ended tragically with the death of the landlord. Once again all of us were speechless - watching the Short-toed widow abandoning her egg again, for a second year in a row, to the local Beech Marten’s sharp teeth and big appetite…
Injured, but victorious, the young male started courting the female, placing the foundations for a new nest but it was too late - breeding season was over and we had to accept another failure.
Another winter passed by (in Africa) and then came breeding season 2022 and showed us that nature has its own rules. On March the 2nd (again…), among the first Short-toed Eagles arriving at their breeding grounds came a male Short-toed Eagle - it was the young male from last year - the “killer”... He waited at the territory for almost two weeks until all of a sudden she arrived also. Can you believe her? Returning to breed in her favorite territory for the seventh time!
The young male court after her with persistence, together they built a new nest and finally, on April 16 the female laid an egg - white as snow, full with life, our precious. Incubation lasted for 47 days and in the end hatching took place on June the 2nd with a sweet nestling feeling our hearts with hope.
Time went by with the devoted parents performing well, especially the young male turning up to be a super hunter, providing the nestling 2-5 snakes a day - amazing! Last week was super busy with a lot of excitement and flying practice making us believe that fledging is about to take place any minute now. But the soon to be fledged nestlings had other plans, lingering a little and enjoying another Black Whip Snake, and a Palestinian Viper - what’s the rush? Finally, at 77 days old, the nestling became a fledgling - officially opening the fledging days where both parents keep taking care of their young. These days can be dangerous also… Many hazards lurk our young Short-toed Eagle, especially predation. Furthermore, autumn migration is just around the corner and there's no time to waste- improving hunting skills, getting stronger, preparing for the tough journey south.

Lai gan ir pagājušas vienpadsmit dienas kopš mazā ērgļa izlidošanas (18.8.22), ligzdā lietas joprojām notiek - dienas laikā to izmanto mazais ērglēns. Tā joprojām ir svarīga barošanas vieta, tāpēc mūsu kamerai ir daudz darba — mums ir paveicies. Šonedēļ barības piegādē dominēja parastais hameleons (Chameleon chameleon), kas ligzdā tika nests katru dienu  — daži no tiem vēl bija pie samaņas — viens no viņiem pat iekoda mazuļa knābī... laika kods 01:15. Lieliskas lietas!

Although eleven days have passed since the Short-toed Eagle fledged (18.8.22) things are still busy in the nest - used by the young fledgling quite often during the day. It is still an important feeding spot so plenty of action for our camera - lucky us. This week was dominated by Common Chameleon (Chameleon chameleon) brought to the nest with 2-3 each day - some of them were still conscious - one of them even bit the fledgling’s beak… time code 01:15. Great stuff!

Dārgie draugi,
Pēc 5 tiešraides emociju un cerību pilniem mēnešiem mūsu tiešraide tuvojas beigām un līdz ari salds noslēgums 3 gadu ilgām drāmām un sirdssāpēm. BEIDZOT čūsku ērgļu vairošanās centieni atnesa skaistu un spēcīgu mazuli.
2020. gadā, 5. apraides sezonā sākās mūsu bēdīgā karma, kad 4 vairošanās sezonu supervīriņš pēc elektrošoka mira uz Izraēlas savvaļas slimnīcas operāciju galda.
2021.gada sezona gan iesākās labi - pēc atgriešanās no Āfrikas teritorijā ieradās pieaudzis tēviņš un kopā ar mūsu mīļo atraitni tika izdēta ola. Diemžēl šis mīlasstāsts beidzās traģiski, kad uzradās jauns tēviņš ar nolūku pārņemt teritoriju un iegūt mātīti sev. Vardarbība bija liela, kaujā uzvarēja jaunais tēviņš un kārtējo reizi ērgļu vairošanās teritorija tika pamesta tukšā.
2022. gada sezona mums pierādīja, ka dabai ir savi noteikumi. Jaunais tēviņš (aka - "slepkava") atgriezās no Āfrikas koncentrējies un apņēmības pilns iekarot mātītes sirdi! Kopā viņi uzbūvēja jaunu ligzdu un 16. aprīļa vakarā - jau 7.reizi mātīte izdēja baltu un ārkārtīgi dārgu olu. 47 dienas vēlāk, 2. jūnijā ola šķīlās, dāvājot mums mazuli un jaunas cerības. Aleluja!
Pagāja dienas, kad vecāki bija tur, lai ligzdu ēnotu, sargājot un barojot mazo ar lielu atdevi visu diennakti. Tēviņš izrādījās prasmīgs mednieks, katru dienu piegādājot līdz 5 medījumiem (galvenokārt čūskas). Un tad, 18. augustā, īspirkstu ērgļu mazulis 77 dienu vecumā atstāja ligzdu. Kopš tā laika jaunais ērglis turpina apmeklēt ligzdu, kur vecāki to turpinās barot un aprūpēt līdz septembra vidum, kad ģimene dosies uz dienvidiem rudens migrācijā. Lai veicas jūsu ceļojumā Āfrikā – mēs ceram jūs satikt nākamajā sezonā.
Un tagad laiks apkopojumam…
Papildus drāmām un emocijām tiešraides mums māca, cik svarīgi ir kvalitatīvi atklāti savvaļas biotopi un to nepārtrauktība. Ar šo mēs saprotam barības daudzumu, ko ērgļi ienes ligzdā, nodrošinot savam mazulim pietiekami daudz barības, lai tas varētu izlidot un pat pēc izlidošanas. Tātad... šajā sezonā ligzdā tika atnestas ne mazāk kā 235 barības vienības, pārsvarā čūskas, tikai ligzdai, bet neaizmirstiet, ka arī vecāki paši medī ... Tātad 235 ir tikai daļa no kopuma. Un tā ir tikai viena čūsku ērgļu ligzda no diezgan daudzām, ar ko mēs Izraēlā lepojamies.
Šī ir mūsu tiešsaistes projekta būtība — kvalitatīvu savvaļas biotopu nozīme, kas atbalsta tādus superplēsējus kā ērgļus, garkāju klijānus, eirāzijas ūpjus un daudz ko citu! Un visas radības, kas veido čūskērgļu ģimenes barības ķēdi... Ja viens šīs ķēdes posms trūkst, visa šī jutīgā struktūra sabrūk.

Ne visas mūsu tiešraides ir kā pastaiga pa parku... Dear friends,
After five months of LIVE, crammed full of emotions and hope, our live transmission is coming to its end and with it - a sweet closure of three long years of dramas and heartache. FINALLY, the reproducing efforts of the Short-toed Eagles bore “fruit” - a beautiful strong fledgling.
Our bad (or sad) karma began on the fifth broadcasting season (2020) when our four breeding seasons' successive super-male got electrocuted and died on the Israeli Wildlife Hospital operations table.
Breeding season 2021 started well though - after returning from Africa, an adult fine male arrived at the Short-toeds territory and together with our beloved widow, an egg was laid. Unfortunately this love story ended tragically when a young male showed up - intending to take over the territory and have the female for himself. Violence was high, the young male won the battle and once again the Short-toed Eagles breeding territory was abandoned “empty-winged”.
And then came breeding season 2022 and proved to us that nature has its own rules. The young male (aka - “the killer”) returned from Africa focused and determined - to win the female’s heart! Together they built a new nest and on April 16 evening - for the seventh time, the female laid a white and extremely precious egg. Forty seven days later, on June the 2nd hatching took place in the famous Short-toed Eagles territory, granting us a tiny nestling and new hope. Hallelujah!
Days passed by with the parents being there for the nestling 24/7 shading, protecting and feeding with great devotion and performance. The male, for incense, turned out to be a skilled hunter, supplying up to five food items (mainly snakes) each day! And then, on August 18, the Short-toed Eagles nestling became a fledgling - leaving the nest at the age of 77 days old. Since then, the young Eagle keeps visiting the nest - where the parents continue to feed and care - until mid September where fledging time will be over and the happy family will head south with their autumn migration. So good luck on your journey and take care in Africa - we hope to meet you guys next breeding season.
And now it’s time to summarize…
Beyond the dramas and emotions the LIVE transmissions teach us how important are quality open wild habitats and its continuity. We understand this importance through the quantity of food items that is brought to the nest by the Eagles - supplying their nestling enough food for it to fledge and even after fledging takes place. So… during this breeding season no less than 235 food items, mostly snakes, were brought to the nest, exclusively for the nestling and don’t forget that the parents prey forthemselvs as well… So 235 food items are only a part of the whole picture - And only one nest of Short-toed Eagles of quite many we are proud to have here in Israel.
This is our online project’s bottom line - the importance of quality wild habitats that support super predators like Short-toed Eagles, Long-legged Buzzards, Eurasian Eagle Owls and many more! And all the creatures compose this food chain ending with one Short-toed Eagles family on top of this sensitive pyramid… If one link of that chain is missing this whole sensitive structure will collapse.
Few more things before we say goodby (for now):
Not all our LIVE transmissions are a walk in the park… Some of them are pretty hard to carry out and require endless effort and stubborn handling by our crew - especially of the Israel Nature Park Authority rangers in the field (When going gets tough the tough get going!). Furthermore, behind the scenes we’re dealing with many more “man-made” dramas and perturbing events that people at home are unaware of. Unfortunately these events take place quite often and without the project staff endless motivation, breeding failure is almost sure.
One last thing - we wish to thank you, our loyal followers, who donated money for this project - enabling it to happen for the seventh year now. You are a true partner of this project, a supporting pillar of our rare and endangered birds of prey breeding success. Thank you.

Ar prieku paziņojam, ka ērgļi ir atgriezušies savā teritorijā un jau perē savā iespaidīgajā jaunajā ligzdā! Mēs iesakām visām apkārtējām čūskām patverties — jūs nevēlaties satikties ar čūsku slepkavu — ērgli. Pēdējās trīs vairošanās sezonās čūskērgļu teritorijā notika nepārtraukta darbība, drāma un traģēdija ar apbrīnojamo mātīti, un 2022. gadā atkal padarīja čūskērgļu teritoriju produktīvu.
Ērgļu novērošana un to dzīves vēstures izpratne ir svarīga sugu saglabāšanai Izraēlā un ārpus tās — tāpēc mēs izmantojām iespēju un ievietojām mūsu tiešsaistes kameras dažās iespējamās ligzdošanas vietās šajā teritorijā, cerot uz viņu atgriešanos.
2023. gada 3. martā mūsu kameras fiksēja jaunu putnu. Dažas dienas vēlāk mēs atpazinām jauno tēviņu, kurš nesekmīgi mēģināja piesaistīt mātīti.
Vai tā ir mūsu slavenā sieviete? Vai tas ir jauns putns? Un, ja tā, kur ir mūsu varone mātīte - čūskērgļu teritorijas zvaigzne? Mums bija jāpagaida tikai nedaudz vairāk, līdz viņa parādījās 11. martā. Beidzot mūsu pieredzējusī mātīte atkal satikās ar savu slaveno partneri, kurš viņu patiesi pielūdz.
Laimīgais pāris bildināja viens otru ar lielu kaislību, viņi bija aizņemti ar jaunas ligzdas būvēšanu un attiecību stiprināšanu - uzdevumu, ko galvenokārt veica jaunais tēviņš, lutinot savu dzīvesbiedru ar garšīgām čūskām. Viņš ir sargs! viņa zina…

Starting 2023 broadcasting season

We’re pleased to tell you that the Short-toed Eagles are back at their territory and already incubating in their impressive new nest! We recommend all snakes around to take cover - you don’t want to mess with that snake-slayer male - the Eagle in charge. For the last three breeding seasons the Short-toed Eagles territory delivered non-stop action, drama and tragedy with the amazing female starring the show. Losing two mates, abandoning two eggs, accepting male No '3 - aka “The Killer'' and turning the Shot-toeds territory productive again in 2022.
Surveilling the Eagles and understanding their life history is important for the species conservation in Israel and beyond - So we took the opportunity of them being away in their wintering grounds in Africa, and placed our online cameras in some potential nesting spots in the territory - hoping for their return.
On March the 3rd 2023 a young bird was recorded by our cameras. A few days later, and after being less discrete, we recognized the young male trying, unsuccessfully, to attract a female.
Is it our famous female? Is it a new bird? And if so, where is our hero female - star of the Short-toed Eagles territory? We had to wait just a little more until she appeared on March 11th. At last, our adult and experienced female reunites with her young and famous partner - who truly worships her.
The happy couple courted each other with great passion, they were busy building a new nest and strengthening their relationship - a task fulfilled mainly by the young male, spoiling his mate with tasty snakes. He’s a keeper! she knows…

Čūskērgļi atkal tiešraidē!

Čūskērgļi inkubē jau astoņas dienas, inkubācijai vajadzētu ilgt 48 dienas, tāpēc mēs paredzam, ka izšķilšanās notiks aptuveni 14. maijā. Cerams.
Inkubāciju veic galvenokārt mātīte, un maiņas notiek galvenokārt agrās rīta stundās. Kad neinkubē, tēviņš ir ļoti aizņemts, meklējot barību dzīvesbiedram (galvenokārt čūskas), nogādājot lomu tieši ligzdā.

Big reptiles - LIVE again!

After recovering from the Short-toed Eagles returning from Africa and beginning the LIVE transmission it’s time for the unique diet of these amazing birds of prey - reptiles. The Short-toeds incubate for eight days already, incubating should last for 48 days so we expect hatching to take place around May 14th. Hopefully.
Incubation is done mainly by the female and changing shifts take place mainly in early morning hours. When not incubating, male Eagle is very busy hunting for his mate (mainly snakes), delivering the catch directly to the nest.

Aizraujoši — mazs putnēns ērgļu ligzdā!
Pēc 46 inkubācijas dienām čūskērgļu ģimene kļūst lielāka, jo viņu vērtīgā ola veiksmīgi izšķīlās 13. maijā agrā rītā. Laipni lūdzam ligzdā. Lai gan nedaudz agri, mēs zinājām, ka tas drīz notiks — pateicoties mūsu uzticīgajiem skatītājiem, kas 12. maijā norādīja uz plaisu olā. Mēs faktiski varējām vērot, kā galvenā plaisa izplešas un mazais cīnās ārā no olas. Forši.

Sākam audzināšanu - aizraujošas dienas ar 2 - 4 ēdienreizēm, kas sastāv no jaunizšķīlušajām, bet galvenokārt lielajām čūskām! Šodien, piemēram, mazulis dabūja nogaršot jaunu Lielo čūsku un hameleonu. Ņammīgi.

Excitement - Tiny nestling in the Short-toed Eagles’ nest!

After 46 days of incubating the Short-toed Eagles family gets bigger after their precious egg hatched successfully on May 13 early morning. Welcome tiny, snowy white and sweet nestling. Although a bit early, we knew it’s about to happen - thanks to our devoted viewers directing First Cracks on the eggshell on May 12.We could actually watch the main crack expand and the tiny nestling struggle its way out inside the egg. Cool.
So what's now?
We begin rearing time - fascinating days with 2 - 4 meals placed in the nest for the newhatched, mainly big snakes! Today, for example, the nestling got to taste a young Large Whip Snake and a Chameleon. Yummi.
