Hi Everyone! Cam is down for a bit this afternoon because Denver is putting up an excluder to keep the geese from nesting. Not quite sure how long that will take, but shouldn't be too much longer. Once the osprey are back, we'll take it down so they can have their nest platform all ready for them!

3/9 Explore mod update: "Hi Everyone!
My apologies for not being able to provide an update sooner-- the day after Denver put up the goose excluder on the nest he had to travel out of state, so it took a little bit of time for us to connect.... but I was FINALLY able to get all the info, so here's what I know:
- Goose excluder went up on Saturday, March 5. This is some sort of construction of chicken wire (I haven't seen it up-close myself yet) that keeps the Canada Geese from being able to build a nest on the platform, keeping it open for the Osprey when they return.
-We are closely monitoring the platform, and the area, so once the Osprey are back (which should be around the beginning of April), we'll remove the excluder and get the cam back on. This is ORI policy, to keep the cam off. However, our goal always is to be able to have all of the cams live, so we are very actively monitoring the situation, and will have the cam back live as soon as we can.
-We understand that it's very disappointing to have this cam on highlights, but by keeping the platform goose nest free until the Osprey get back, we're hoping we'll be able to provide Charlotte and Charlie with a prime nesting location, so that we're able to watch them raise another family up close (unlike last year, when they chose a nest too far for the cam to see very well)."
Thank you all for your continued patience- I'll keep you updated as soon as I know anything.
Thanks, Lauren

Howdy folks,
Canada Geese love to nest on Osprey platforms, and they can start nesting on them before the Ospreys return from migration. Believe it or not, but a cranky Canada Goose on eggs beats out the returning Ospreys. When this happens, the Ospreys can get in serious trouble by starting new nests nearby - often on very dangerous power poles. The Ospreys can get electrocuted, cause fires and blackouts.
Canada Geese have plenty of other places to nest, but the Ospreys do not. So at the nests we know there are likely to be bad outcomes for the Ospreys, we put up "goose excluders" on the nests before the Ospreys return from migration. These are simply wire cones that keep the geese off the nest. We watch the nests like hawks . . . er like Ospreys . . . and as soon as one returns to that nest we remove the goose excluder. The Ospreys hop right on their nest.
Attached are a few photos from Monday, 21 March 2022, showing Rob Domenech (Director of Raptor View Research Institute) installing some goose excluders.

4/12- Explore mod post from yesterday: Just got this update from Denver:
On Friday he saw an Osprey flying over the Roger's place/right by the cam, so he rushed over with the ladder to try to take down the goose excluder, but wasn't able to get it by himself and due to the high winds/bad weather. Once the weather permits and schedules align with the field crew he'll get out and take down the excluder. His plan is to get that done sometime this afternoon, weather permitting. It's been quite windy here today, as you can see on the Great Horned Owl cam!), as soon as he sees an Osprey on the perch
Denver doesn't think that the Osprey he saw on Friday was Charlotte or Charlie, since he hasn't seen it since then. He's on high alert, and checks the area daily (multiple times, as he's coming and going around the property). Once he sees an Osprey in the area we'll get the cam on ASAP. He keeps notes on arrivals every year, and they match the info in Robin's pinned post above-- April 13 is when we usually see our Osprey back.
Hopefully we'll see our birds soon, and as soon as we do the cam will be back on! I'll also give updates on when the goose excluder does indeed come down too.

Drama on the Charlo Osprey Nest Live Cam!
Charlie, our male from previous years, seems to be back... but with a new female! (Charlotte, the female from previous years, does not seem to be back yet... but she may still yet show up!) And, earlier this afternoon, a second unknown male showed up and attacked Charlie on the nesting platform... Visit the live cam site link below to check out the action from today!

Charlotte!! I knew she'd come back!
