Concerned by the nestling’s health
04/03/2023
Bonelli’s Eagles nestlings were taken out of their nest for medical care after fearing of getting infected by a deadly parasite. The treated nestlings were returned to their nest immediately after. Once again the Bonelli’s provide the drama.
So what exactly happened?
Fear of getting infected by Trichomonas gallinae parasite increased during the last days when the two nestlings started to show first signs of illness. In case you forgot, the Trichomonas parasite settles the upper digestive system, blocks the pharynx until the sick bird dies of hunger or choking to death. Infected by the parasite is via food - especially Rock Doves, an essential part of the Eagles menu, and a Trichomonas vectors.
Immediately after witnessing these first signs, thanks to our online camera, we’ve decided to take action ASAP so the treatment can take place in the nest. After consulting ecologists Asaf Mayrose and Ohad Hatzofe from the scientific division of the Israel Nature and Park Authority we’ve decided to abseil to the nest for the nestling’s inspection. As usual, the mission was putten on Walter Neser’s professional shoulders and together with Libi Mori and the assistance of Roi Gilad and more INPA crew, the nestlings were taken out of the nest. A close inspection by Roni Elias Ofri revealed first signs of Trichomonas in one of the nestlings while the other nestling was worryingly weak and may also have gotten infected by the parasite.
Both nestlings were first aided and since the symptoms point to early stages of the disease, they were placed back in the nest, not before treating them with medication. Later on, male and female Eagles returned to the nest, feeding their precious rare nestlings. We’ll keep on watching them and hope for a full and swift recovery.
