Long-legged Buzzards are back and breeding! העקבים חזרו! והם כבר דוגרים בשידור חי!Long-legged Buzzards are back and breeding!

The Israel Raptor Nestcam Project was launched in 2016 and has delivered no less than 22 different live streams since, including full breeding seasons of Bonelli’s Eagle (Aquila fasciata), Short-toed Eagle (Circaetus gallicus) , Eurasian Eagle Owl (Bubo bubo), Egyptian Vulture (Neophron percnopterus) and Eurasian Griffons (Gyps fulvus).
By using carefully placed state of the art HD cameras we managed to broadcast live (24/7) streams of complete nesting seasons of these amazing birds of prey. Our live broadcasts are powerful conservation tools, stressing the importance of protecting the wild open spaces and keeping our fragile ecosystems safe.
Due to the project’s success we’ve decided to place our cameras this breeding season (2023) also. A few months ago, while the Buzzards were still in their wintering grounds, we placed cameras in front of some optional nests and… waited patiently for the Buzzards to return. Once again overcoming the hazards of migration, the Buzzards showed up at their breeding territory in November-December, strengthening their relations by courting, renovating nests and mating.
Being a power couple doesn't guarantee an “issues” free relationship and just like every year male Buzzard desired nest A’ while the female aimed at nest B’! This romantic disagreement lasted for a month or so, until February 9th, or 10th, when the female laid the first egg in… nest A! Satisfying her mate but still calling the shots!
So beautiful!

The Buzzards are so impressive - nature’s top models. They’ve been incubating for 23-24 days since laying their first egg on February 9th or 10th. This year also it is hard to tell how many eggs are in the nest, but we assume that there are at least three, Maybe four, we’ll find out soon, when the eggs start to hatch.
For the meantime incubation takes place seriously and devotedly. As usual female Buzzard is the dominant incubator - being replaced from time to time but mainly hunts for her. What a power couple.
