Kia ora koutou (hello everyone)
L arrived on the evening of the 4th December as the egg is 30 days old and GLY had completed and incubation stint of 10 days. We are, however, starting to see even longer changeovers around the colony which is normal in this middle part of incubation. Neither GLY or L have been away longer than 14 days during their past seasons.
Our procedures around long changeovers are as follows:
At 13 days incubation we remove the egg to another nest, or to the incubator. Based on our records, the risk of desertion increases if a bird has been attending for more than 13 days with no break. If they desert the nest in the evening when we’re not here, the egg will go cold and likely die.
At 15 days incubation we hydrate the bird on the nest.
At around 17 days incubation we hydrate and feed.
At 19-20 days we hydrate and feed again, or think about “releasing” the bird depending on the weather, and how they are doing generally. (Releasing the bird means that the dummy egg is removed, they will not stay on the nest for long without an egg to incubate.)
The feeding and hydrating might vary a little bit around the general guide of 15/17/19 days, depending on the bird and weather. We have kept birds on the nest, with hydration and feeding, up to around 24 days of incubation. We have also seen the partner return and resume normal changeovers after a period this long.
In the meantime the embryos are growing within the eggshell and we can see which ones are viable or infertile by shining a light by the shell while in a dark space. At South Plateau the egg is over one third of its incubation time.
