I have had a few questions regarding missing parents and chicks being supplementary fed, which I will address for everyone in this post.
There is some general ranger work information in this link:
https://www.doc.govt.nz/nat...
It does take 2 parents to raise an albatross chick to fledging so if a parent goes missing, either in the short term or permanently the ranger team will supplementary feed the chick as a replacement of the food requirements that it should get from the parents.
We currently have a few chicks who receive period supplementary feeding including Quarry Track chick. It is not uncommon for a parent to be away a few weeks before returning. Even though one parent feeds the chick, it may still need topped up.
We also have 2 chicks that require supplementary feeding 4 times a week.
One is Observation Post chick, this is the foster chick that I have previously posted about who had a stint at the Dunedin Wildlife Hospital. Dad, GOK has been seen recently but mum, BKY as not been seen since the end of March.
The other chick is the nearby Disappearing Gun chick, note the Disappearing Gun pit in the foreground of this photo.
Also a foster chick, mum, GWL has not been seen since early March and dad, LOW has not been seen since early April. Regular supplementary feeding for this chick began in mid April.
It is not possible for us to record every time a parent is in so these dates may not be the latest a parent was seen at these nests.
It is not uncommon for 1 or 2 parents to go missing any given season, sometimes they return and sometimes they do not, it is a big ocean out there and none of the parents are being tracked this season.

https://www.doc.govt.nz/nat...
