Kia ora koutou (hello everyone) Here is today's media release...

Royal Cam chick named Lilibet to acknowledge Queen

The toroa/northern royal albatross chick featured on this season’s Royal Cam livestream has been named Lilibet to acknowledge the passing of Queen Elizabeth II.

Lilibet was the first chick to fledge from the Pukekura/Taiaroa Head colony, near Dunedin, this season. She took flight on 3 September, beginning a huge global journey that will take her tens of thousands of kilometres over several years.

Lilibet was the focus of the 2021/22 season’s Royal Cam, a 24/7 livestream hosted on the Department of Conservation (DOC) website and the Cornell Lab’s global network of live bird cams. Each season it broadcasts a chosen chick’s journey from egg to fledgling, providing insight into the behaviour of these special birds and the work that goes into conserving them.

Some fans of the Royal Cam livestream suggested it would be appropriate to name this year’s chick in acknowledgement of the Queen’s life of service. After discussions with Te Poāri a Pukekura (The Pukekura Co-management Trust, which includes representatives from mana whenua, the Dunedin City Council and DOC), the name Lilibet was chosen.

Hoani Langsbury, Ecotourism Manager at the Royal Albatross Centre, says “we are cognisant of the role 'The Royals’ play in our day to day lives at Pukekura. I think Lilibet is the most appropriate name for this chick at this time.”

DOC Ranger Sharyn Broni says it’s fitting that Lilibet’s name acknowledges the Queen’s passing, given the species is known as northern royal albatross, and due to the engagement the Royal Family has had with the Taiaroa Head colony.

“The Royal Albatross Centre was officially opened by Anne, Princess Royal, in 1989. Prince (now King) Charles also visited the colony in 2005 and is an advocate for albatross conservation, including sharing a Live Ocean video produced in Dunedin for World Albatross Day in 2020.

Sharyn Broni says it was a successful breeding season with 25 chicks at the colony, of which at least 23 have already fledged.

“Unfortunately, one of Lilibet’s parents went missing this season which meant the rangers were providing her with regular supplementary feeds to keep her at a healthy weight.

“Both parents of another chick went missing before May, and rangers provided more than 100 supplementary feeds, totalling about 111kg of southern blue whiting, salmon smolt, anchovies, sprats, squid and octopus. The chick successfully fledged on October 3.”
Sharyn Broni says it highlights the threats toroa face in the wild. “We can all help by picking up rubbish at beaches and around waterways, so plastic doesn’t get into the ocean, as toroa can mistake it for food which can have serious consequences.”

The next breeding season is already starting up, with about 20 adult toroa having arrived at the colony.

Lilibets bija pirmais cālis, kurš šosezon aizlidoja no Pukekura/Taiaroa Head kolonijas netālu no Dunedinas.

LGK is sitting up at Top Flat today on the very beginnings on a nest.

LGK has raised Royalcam chicks Karere and Tiaki in past seasons. He is now 13 years old, relatively young, the oldest toroa we will see this season are a 40 year old female and a 43 year old male.
He was tracked during 2021 and was last recorded over the Challenger Plateau in the Tasman Sea around the time Tiaki fledged. As expected the GPS unit has been dropped by the molted feathers on his back where it was attached.

He will have spent the last 12 months feeding in the waters around South America building up reserves for the next breeding season.

LGL (LGK's mate) has not been seen as yet but it is possible that she could have been in overnight.

Egg-citing news!

This morning, the first toroa egg of the 2022/23 season has been laid. The pair are GK and BKW, 18 and 17 years old*. They started breeding together in 2012 and have fledged four chicks. They started a little earlier than when they laid on the 5th of November in 2020,It’s all go with around 120 toroa sighted so far.

Royal spoonbills are back nesting in the trees past the Lighthouse. Red-billed gulls have started to lay eggs and one or two nests even have chicks.

Check out this short video of Royal spoonbills, they have not always nested at Pukekura, our predator trapping and the red-billed gull's early warning system provide a safe area for the Royal spoonbills to thrive.

Rangers have been busy behind the scenes too, this is the time to prepare for upcoming incubation, irrigation, and banding. Check out
what we do here :
*This pair is way down the hill out of cam and Royal Albatross Centre viewing, but it will not be too long before other eggs are laid.

There will be news of the pairs who fledged chicks during 2021 in the coming weeks.

https://www.doc.govt.nz/nature/native-a ... in-korora/
*Šis pāris atrodas tālu no kalna no kameras un Royal Albatross Center apskates, taču nepaies pārāk ilgs laiks, līdz tiks dētas citas olas.

Tuvāko nedēļu laikā būs ziņas par pāriem, kuriem 2021. gadā izlidoja cāļi.

There are now 13 toroa eggs at Pukekura.

Note: No decision has been made in a new cam location yet. Egg laying is still ongoing, only when that finishes will we decide which nest to focus the cam on. There are other options from what we see in this update. Typically a first time breeding pair would not be chosen.

LKL's mate GL is now on an egg, which is likely why LKL has been seen wandering around past the cam a bit as he waits for his time to incubate and let GL head out to the ocean to feed.

BOK, whose mate is WYL and were keeping company in front of the cam last summer has laid an egg too. This egg has been transferred to the incubator and she is incubating a ceramic egg as they are first time breeders. This ensures that they can safely practice their changeovers without breaking the precious egg.

LGL and GLG are also close to laying....and close to BOK's nest at Top Flat.

Here is LGL looking gravid. LGK is not in today but will be back soon. Here is a pic of the nests at Top Flat this morning. We are expecting many more eggs to be laid in the coming couple of weeks or so.

Behind the scenes, rangers have been preparing the incubation room, the irrigation system, bands, and more. Donations from the Otago Peninsula Trust give-a-little page have gone towards incubation equipment and new bands.

We already have a few eggs in an incubator as there are first-time breeders with eggs now. It is also hoiho breeding season and we loan one of our incubators to the Dunedin Wildlife Hospital so they can incubate any hoiho eggs they receive.

Four toroa/northern royal albatross eggs are missing from the colony at Taiaroa Head/Pukekura, near Dunedin.

Date: 14 November 2022

The eggs were found to be missing on Thursday morning during routine checks.

DOC Compliance officers and police are investigating, with support from the Royal Albatross Centre and mana whenua.

DOC Coastal Otago Operations Manager Annie Wallace says this is a very unusual event.

“The colony has been managed and monitored for years, and it’s strange for eggs to disappear without a trace.”

“It’s still unclear what has happened, and we are gathering security camera footage and talking to people who may have relevant information. However, it’s thought the eggs may have been taken as there are no signs they were eaten by predators.”

Annie Wallace says toroa are nationally vulnerable and threatened by climate change, fishing practices, plastic pollution, and habitat loss. They also reproduce slowly, so all eggs and chicks are important to the population.

“They need all the help they can get, and it will be extremely disappointing if someone has taken these eggs.

“This is devastating for our staff who put in countless hours caring for these birds in challenging conditions, keeping them cool on hot days, working to prevent flystrike, and providing supplementary feeds to underweight chicks.”

Te Poari a Pukekura Management Group Chair Nadia Wesley-Smith says, “the disappearance of toroa eggs from Pukekura is deeply concerning, and considered by Te Poari a Pukekura as not only a disruption to the mauri and mana of the headland, but also has a devastating impact to the toroa population, and the conservation efforts of all who care for our taoka species”.

Te Rūnanga o Ōtakou Chair Rachel Wesley said the hapū from Ōtākou have a close affinity with the toroa at Pukekura, so we view the unexplained disappearance with the utmost concern.

“Due to the slow breeding cycle and vulnerable status of toroa, any loss of eggs or chicks from natural causes is disappointing, but the unexplained nature of this particular incident, and especially with the suggestion it may be people who are responsible, is absolutely devastating.

“I hope answers to their whereabouts will be found quickly and the eggs of this important taoka species still remain viable.”

Taiaroa Head is the only mainland site in the world where toroa breed, and one of the few places in the world where people can easily see them. It’s a privilege that people need to respect, Annie Wallace says.

The site is a nature reserve and is fully fenced, and entry is by permit only. There is also a Wildlife Foreshore Sanctuary along the coast which restricts both foot and boat access. If anyone has any information that might help find these eggs, they are asked to call 0800 DOC HOT (0800 362 468) or the Police non-emergency number 105.

Toroa are one of the largest seabirds in the world, with a wingspan of more than 3m. There are about 17,000 of these long-lived birds left, and they range widely across the Southern Ocean. Most breed on several islands in the Chatham Islands.

Toroa are protected under the Wildlife Act and it is an offense to kill, injure, harass or disturb them.

Kolonijā Taiaroa Head/Pukekurā netālu no Danedinas ir pazudušas četras toroa/ziemeļu karaliskā albatrosa olas.

Datums: 2022. gada 14. novembris

An update of the missing eggs. Note that no albatross were harmed, it is only the eggs that are missing.

Missing eggs case may remain a mystery Saturday, 19 November 2022

The Department of Conservation (DOC) says it may never crack the case of Dunedin’s missing albatross eggs — and fears remain the eggs may have been poached.

DOC raised the alarm this week that four northern royal albatross (toroa) eggs were discovered missing from Taiaroa Head on Otago Peninsula during daily monitoring of the colony’s nests late last week.

DOC coastal Otago operations manager Annie Wallace said because the investigation under way continued to come up empty, it increasingly pointed to an orchestrated effort to steal the protected eggs.

If anyone had been "blundering around" the Doc reserve on Wednesday night last week, it was unlikely they could have avoided being seen on the CCTV footage that had since been collated and reviewed, Ms Wallace said.

While the investigation was continuing, the reason the eggs went missing could remain a mystery unless people came forward with information.

"It feels like it’s been really well planned.

"I think there’s a high chance that it will remain unsolved."

The suspected theft had shocked people locally, nationally and internationally.
Armchair experts had put forward their own theories as to what happened.

Commenters suggested the eggs could have been blown off their nests, an idea Ms Wallace called "implausible".

"If they had, there would have been evidence, and [it was unlikely] four would have blown away on one night."

There were similar issues with those who believed predators were the culprits.

Some people had come to Doc suggesting stoats rolled the eggs away and took them to their dens.

Yet, that phenomenon involved eggs of a species that were much smaller than albatross eggs.

Moreover, rangers had searched all over the headland, uncovering nothing.

Predator trapping, undertaken across the headland, had also caught nothing.

Staff had not seen predators on CCTV cameras of late, and a predator would not have been able to get four eggs away in one night with no evidence, she said.

The CCTV cameras on site provided good coverage of all the normal access points to the reserve.

Port Otago’s security footage had been reviewed to assess whether the reserve was accessed by water.

Specialists were also required to access further footage available from Blue Penguins Pukekura.

However, Ms Wallace said she feared it was unlikely that footage would turn up anything either.

No stone would remain unturned, but the investigation had ruled out seemingly plausible explanations for the eggs’ disappearance.

There had been "a lot of discussion" about a potential market for the eggs, Ms Wallace said.

Investigators had been in contact with staff who dealt with the New Zealand Customs Service and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species.

"They’re looking into that — they haven’t come up with anything yet, but that’s not to say there’s not things going on internationally that we don’t know about."

Two jewelled geckos (moko kakariki) were taken from Otago Peninsula in 2010.

One was smuggled into Germany and later sent back to New Zealand after being spotted on Facebook in 2013 by Dunedin herpetologist Carey Knox.

Albatross eggs at the colony have also been targeted once before, in 1938.

At that time, one of Dunedin’s early conservationists Lance Richdale spent weeks over the breeding season protecting nests at the colony.

Update from Sharyn Broni ~ Nov 24th 2022 😘🌷
Kia ora koutou (hello everyone)
On Monday 28th November the live stream will be OFF while Julia and I move the webcam to the 2022/23 Royalcam nest location. Details to be revealed after the cam move! We will turn the cam back on as soon as practical.
This is the 8th season of Royalcam and by the end of January 2023 we hope to have a Royalcam chick who will joining the past 7 chicks in being live streamed around the world. You will be able to read about the family here and in the Meet the Royal Family page when it is updated on Monday.
Egg laying is drawing to a close but we will not be disclosing the number of eggs at this stage due to the missing egg situation.
Questions have been raised regarding the security of the fence at Pukekura* and the current stage of the investigation.
Here is a response to recent media questions from DOC Coastal Otago Operations Manager Annie Wallace:
"The land and operations at Pukekura/Taiaroa Head are overseen by a joint management body called Te Poari a Pukekura (TPP), which is comprised of Ōtākou Runaka, the Korako Karetai trust, Dunedin City Council and DOC.

TPP’s mandate is to deliver on the management plan for the area, which is available here: https://www.doc.govt.nz/.../pukekura-taiaroa-head.../
The organisations that are part of TPP work closely and effectively together to meet the goals of the management plan. We also work closely with the Royal Albatross Centre, who do great conservation work at the colony.

The toroa colony has been successful in recent years. For example, 30 toroa fledged from the colony during the 2020/21 season, which was a record for the site.

DOC and the police are still reviewing security camera footage from a range of sources, as it has taken time to access some of the footage.

The new fence was funded and installed by TPP in stages over the last few years, to replace the old, mismatched fencing which needed regular maintenance.

No fence will be totally impenetrable, but the current fence provides security for the site, protects areas and wildlife that is sensitive to human disturbance, and keeps rabbits out.

As mentioned above, the current management and operations are working well and the toroa colony has been successful in recent years.

DOC and the police are continuing to investigate, we are currently reviewing security camera footage from several sources and await the outcome of this work."
