No vairāk nekā 700 saņemtajām vārdu nominācijām ir izveidots īss 20 vārdu saraksts. Šis saraksts ir kopā ar Te Poari a Pukekura (Pukekua / Taiaroa Head Co-management Trust), lai noteiktu 5 vārdu galīgo īso sarakstu, kas nākamās nedēļas beigās tiks publiski balsots.Sharyn Broni (Ranger, DOC)

Pirmie pieci vārdi.Inspirations of the top five names
Each of the top five names this year are te reo Maori, the indigenous language of New Zealand, in the Kāi Tahu mita dialect. Find out their meaning and what inspired entrants to submit each below:
Mahara
Mahara means to think about, consider or remember. The entrant was inspired by this name as they felt it important to mahara that we share the oceans with albatross and continue to support and protect them.
Ururaki
Ururaki means winds of the sky. It is the name of a star in the Matariki cluster, also known as the Pleiades star cluster. Its annual appearance over New Zealand marks Māori New Year.
This star has been used to predict the nature of the winds for the year. This inspired its suggestion for the chick who will soon master them.
Tiaki
Tiaki means to protect, preserve, and care. The submitter of this name hopes it inspires protection of our planet and the care it needs. The name is to remind us to preserve the land and sea the Royal Cam chick and other wildlife depend on.
Kaihautū
Kaihautū means navigator. This entrant hopes that as the chick learns to navigate the Southern Ocean, we will also learn to navigate ways to guard our natural world. It is to inspire us to overcome this challenge in a way that benefits people and wildlife together.
Ataraki
Ataraki means morning Sky. This person who offered this name hopes it will be a reminder that every day as the sun rises, we have new opportunities. These can offer new ways to take on the responsibility to preserve, protect, and be guardians.

Kia ora koutou (hello everyone)
This year's theme for Name the Chick was ‘kaitiaki’, the Māori concept of guardianship over the land, sea and sky.
One way that everyone can play a part in protecting albatross and other marine wildlife is to keep plastic out of the ocean.
Adult albatross may feed it to their chick. It has no food value, can cause damage from sharp edges and in large quantities can be fatal.
This 9cm long plastic pony was found at one of the other chicks nests on Tuesday during the morning weighing round. We believe that a parent has regurgitated this for the chick. It may have been in some fish that it caught. Fortunately the chick did not take it.
On a happier note the 'about to be named' Royalcam chick has been fed by both parents today. LGK cam in first at around 1145am NZST.
Although LGKs GPS has not sent a signal for a few days recently his impressive trip to the Cook Strait has been uploaded on to the Albatross Tracer app. Click on the Interactive Map tab and Choose a Bird.

Chick weighing and parent foraging
Today the Royalcam chick is 100 days old and weighs 7.1kg. She has been fed by LGK (dad) this morning so the weight today is quite healthy.
A few days ago the South Plateau chick made it up the hill from the nest and was in view of the cam giving us the unusual sight of 3 chicks in view.
Here is a pic of the South Plateau chick in her nest area with the Royalcam chick and the cam itself in the background.
Balsošana ir beigusies un vārdiņu paziņošot nākošās nedēļas sākumā.
