There are some islands where mice have been eating albatross but that does not happen here.
Mice, specifically introduced house mice (Mus musculus), attack albatrosses because they have become a readily available food source, particularly during times of food scarcity. These mice, introduced to islands like Marion Island and Midway Atoll, have been observed to prey on both albatross chicks and adults, sometimes eating them alive while they are nesting. This behaviour is particularly pronounced during winter months when alternative food sources like insects are scarce.
Here at Pukekura the mice are still able to find plenty of food sources during the winter.
