Vecāki gribētu nedaudz laika veltīt viens otram, bet Tiaki tas nepatīk.

Today Tiaki is 205 days old and weighs 9.5kg. SSTrig is 204 days old and weighs 9.9kg. Both chicks continue to do well. Supplementary feeding continues for a few of the chicks who may be missing a parent or whose parents are not managing to bring in enough food.

A brief note regarding the Covid lockdown.
At this stage we are in lockdown for 3 days, underweight chicks were fed yesterday and will not be needing fed again till the weekend.
Plateau was fed by a parent this morning.
The albatross are large birds and can go for quite some time without food.
Stay safe everyone.

The Taiaroa Head team hope you have been keeping safe where ever you are.
Our team have been granted a Level 4 critical work exemption for weighing and supplementary feeding of known light weight chicks.
Theo and a person from his personal bubble will be out on the headland this afternoon to carry out this work following full Covid-19 health and safety procedures along with all our general health and safety work.Tiaki is now 213 days old

Here is Tiaki being weighed on day 213. (We have a Level 4 exemption for this work done by bubble partners). She weighed in at 9.2kg having just been fed by LGL. 9.2kg is a good weight for this age.
Seven chicks were weighed yesterday but only 3 needed supplementary fed. Strong winds during the last week have brought plenty of parents in to feed their chicks.

Yesterday all the chicks were weighed with our Level 4 essential work bubble exemption.
At 218 days of age Tiaki weighed in at 8.1kg. This is just marginally below where we would like to see her weight but not serious enough to trigger a supplementary feeding.
Check out the track the chicks weight page and you will see that the weights of the chicks drop prior to fledging.

The weight drop is necessary for fledging to occur. The parents are struggling to bring in food now and will need that year off before they can breed again. The chicks body size and wing span is much more adult like now so they do not have the food requirements that they had in winter to maintain heat and grow fast.
Hopefully LGK is on his way back to the headland:

Only 2 chicks required supplementary feeding yesterday.
