Yes BK and RBK's egg is hatching. It started on Monday and we should have a chick in the nest on Thursday/Friday.
Lavender placed in a bottle behind the nest to deter flies (fly strike is a major issue at this critical hatching stage)
Peppermint essence placed on cotton wool in a plastic tube pegged into the nest also helps deter flies.
We will make a judgement call each day as to where the hatching egg will stay for each day (too warm and/or calm means that fly strike risk is high. On those days it would be put in the incubator and returned to the nest at dusk).
Once hatched (the chick then has to stay at the nest) it is still vulnerable to fly strike until it is 5 days old, so many checks will be made by staff each day and to check its health/weight.
