The Royalcam nest.
Mum, Dad and female chick!
Since hatching at 286g on the 28th of January, the Royalcam chick at Signal Station Flat has grown to 3.1 kg on day 35 (Tuesday 4th of March). This is a big 1.1 kg increase on the weight from last week.
View the graph on: https://www.doc.govt.nz/nature/native-a ... ks-weight/
Weighing is now weekly on Tuesday’s weather allowing and is now a 2-person task.
Comparisons of average male and female chick weights and all the past Royalcam chicks are also included. Rangers use weight data to determine when a chick requires feeding intervention.
A small blood sample has been taken from all the chicks to determine each one’s sex. This enables us to be able to supplementary feed any chick that requires it to the correct amount as males are heavier than females, but they can be difficult to tell apart by sight. We usually have approximately 50:50 male and female chicks. We sampled the Royalcam chick on the 17th of February and the Royalcam chick is a female. This is the 3rd female chick for this pair.
End of guard stage, post-guard stage
The first few weeks of the toroa chicks’ life called the guard stage varies from 3 to 5 weeks with an average of 4 weeks guarding the chick likely.
Either parent will leave the chick alone for the first time.
GLG has been more inclined to keep brooding her chick when she has been in, but this is not likely to last much longer. The chick has had one night alone so far, and this will soon become the new normal.
Current location of GLG and RLK/A85.
Both parents have been foraging close to the headland during the guard and early post-guard stage.
