COLONY UPDATE from Ranger Jim Watts
Good afternoon everyone,
We have still only had the one chick fledge, so 22 remain on the headland. It has been very calm out here since Tuesday so not ideal fledging conditions.
Sharyn and I weighed the chicks today. The birds are looking good with only a few still having a few wisps of down on their necks or bellies. Except for Toroa’s chick who still has quite a bit of down across its neck. No surprises there as it is the youngest chick and 10 days younger than the second youngest chick so a wee way to go. Our lightest bird was 6.5kg while the heaviest bird was 10.9kg and this happened to be Tūmanako. He had been fed earlier this morning by one of his parents which helps explain his weight. Most of the other (estimated) boys are now down around the mid 9-kilogram mark so gradually losing weight in preparation to fledge. Four birds were supplementary fed today.
Cheers
Jim
