Cross fostering is a process where a chick not gaining weight in a nest will be swapped with a larger, fuller chick from another nest to get the smaller chick fed quicker by a parent. Toroa are accepting of other chicks prior to the end of the guard stage when there is a parent on the nest full time. This means less need for supplementary feeding which is better for the chick.
RLK/A85 has been on the nest several days now and the Royalcam chick is not gaining as much weight as we would like to see. GLG is still foraging over 500km away and we have a nest available that will feed the chick sooner.
This is a temporary move, and the chick will be returned to its nest at some point, possibly after a changeover here.

After being temporarily swapped to a neighbouring nest where the parent had plenty of food the Royalcam chick has been placed back in its own nest and the foster returned to its nest. There was a good weight gain for the Royalcam chick this morning
At 6 days on the nest RLK/A85 is running low on food to sustain his chick. Now the chick weighs 575g it will not need fed again for a while.
Meanwhile GLG having flown over 800km on a foraging trip up the coast seems to be on her way back.

Kia ora koutou (hello everyone)
The Royalcam nest.
Weighing in at 286g at hatching on the 28th of January, and up to 580g on day 6 on the 3rd of February the chicks growth rate has been good. We will be tracking the chick’s weight up until fledging in September before this time the chick should weigh at least 7kg.

Comparisons of average male and female chick weights and all the past Royalcam chicks are on these graphs also. Rangers use data to determine when a chick requires feeding intervention.
We will weigh the chick twice a day for the first week and once a day, typically in the morning for the second week. After the second week weighing will be once a week, mostly on a Tuesday, weather allowing.
During the first couple of weeks, we check the chick over for any issues such as food spills in the nest that can attract flies. Antiseptic is sometimes applied to the umbilicus to counteract risk of infection.
GLG atgriezās ligzdā, šī bija viņas barības meklēšanas ceļojuma 7. diena, un viņa vēl nebija redzējusi savu cāli.GLG arrived back at the nest, this was day 7 of her foraging trip and she had not yet seen her chick.
GLG’s round trip of foraging, around 1200km.
Now it is RLK/A85’s turn to search for food.
