"Access to Taiaroa Head is still blocked by several slips which have covered the road, however, as some of you heard on National Radio this morning, we were able to make it out to the headland using a water taxi. A big thank you to John from Wheels over Water for his services today. I teamed up with staff from the Royal Albatross Centre (RAC) to check on the albatross, Little Blue penguins and the infrastructure at the headland.
It was a relief to find there were no landslips in the albatross colony and all 23 chicks were looking good. We didn’t get around to weighing all the chicks today, just the ones that have been consistently underweight in the past and that have been on our radar. We fed five of those chicks today. Our main concern was for one chick who we think may have lost a parent. We haven’t seen the female parent for about a month and a half and have been feeding the chick 2-3 times per week. We gave it a good feed on Friday to get it through the weekend weather then another top up today. The lightest chicks today were 7.6kg when they should be up above 8.0kg. We’ll be re-checking these chicks and do a full check of all the chicks later in the week."
