COLONY UPDATE
Good afternoon everyone.
It has been a surprisingly OK day out here today. Very little rain and a good wind to bring some of the parents in. Tūmanako was 9.4kg. This is a drop in weight from last week but we’re not too worried as it was fed soon after by BK. We’ll keep an eye on Tūmanako and probably check it again later in the week. RBK did come in as well but didn’t feed Tūmanako and this also happened to another chick today. Why? Well I’m not entirely sure.
For the other chicks in the colony, their weights ranged from 7.2kg to 11.4kg. The lightest chick today was Toroa’s chick. It is the youngest in the colony so it wasn’t too bad. We gave it some supplementary food and then dad (Toroa/LOG) came in late in the afternoon so the chick got another feed. Four other chicks were given supplementary food today. Like last week, with the cold weather forecast it’s good to get food into these lighter chicks to help them through the cold nights. The chick at Rushes (the chick that was fostered to the webcam nest earlier in the year) has been a bit nervous the past few weeks so we are giving it some space. It’s the only bird that wasn’t weighed today but it was good to see a parent come in late in the day.
