Once leaving Pukekura juveniles quickly learn about life on the ocean where they will spend 85% of their lives. They will learn to feed off the east coast of Aotearoa/New Zealand before crossing the 9000km across the Pacific Ocean to the Humbolt Current off the coast of Chile. Juveniles do not touch ground for on average 5 years when they return to their breeding ground having circumnavigated the globe.
The parents of fledging juveniles, now exhausted from the 7 months of feeding a huge chick also head across the Pacific Ocean where they will spend the next 12 months building up reserves for a new breeding season in 1 years’ time.

The parents (LGK and LGL) of Karere, Tiaki and Kiwa have a male chick at Top Flat, number 1000 for the life of the colony. The chick received a GPS tracker and fledged on the 12th of September.
Last 17 days of Top Flat chicks GPS tracking data, Top Flat stayed relatively close to the takutai/coastline before heading out across the continental shelf. The higher the number in the coloured circles, the more time has been spent in the area.
YWK and KGY, Moana’s parents have a male chick (now fledged) and Tūmanako’s dad BK and his new mate RLW have a female chick. GO and WO, the foster parent’s of 2018 chick Amīria had a broken egg but raised a female foster chick who has now fledged.
Past Royalcam chicks that have returned to Pukekura are Moana, now 10 years old, Tūmanako and Amīria. Tūmanako, who fledged in 2017, returned at the end of 2021 and has been ‘keeping company’ with a 7-year-old female (i.e. serious about breeding).
First toroa back for the 26/27 breeding season
At 8 years of age and having just arrived back from a winter off the coast of South America, A50 is the first toroa back to start the 2026/27 breeding season. A50 hasn’t bred yet, breeding starts at an average of 8 years of age, but she has been looking for a mate over the past 3 seasons. Only time will tell if she breeds during the 2026/27 season. With only one bird back so far, it will be a several weeks before all the breeders have arrived from their year off.
