Royalcam Season 10
Season 10 of Royalcam will be a big milestone for us. We are keeping likely pairs under wrap and will share the activities of past Royalcam pairs once the cam is at its new location. This will happen once egg laying has finished to ensure no nesting toroa are disturbed at this very sensitive time. We also want to include all options in our final decision of the new location.
Egg laying continues throughout November and both parents take turns to incubate the egg while the other forages off the coast of Aotearoa/New Zealand.

The story of an orphan toroa
GO and WO the parents of the orphaned Top of Bluff Track have returned to Pukekura. Their chick was very difficult at the end of the post-guard stage and wandered a long way from his nest. We suspect the parents were not able to find him and left for the winter to try again the next season.

At ages 40 and 44 respectively, GO and WO are the oldest toroa pair at Pukekura currently, so we are very pleased to see them back.
It is not unheard of for missing parents to reappear, but it is unusual. We have never seen either parent of the first orphan chick from Disappearing Gun during 2021.
Top of Bluff Track juvenile now appears to have been foraging southeast of Rēhohu/Chatham Islands as indicated by the points that are close together.
