Egg candling 2nd of January.
At around 9am Julia candled the Signal Station Trig egg to check for healthy development. The embryo is developing just fine and is 52 days old. If we do find failed eggs the parents can be given a dummy for when we need them as foster parents later. This increases the chances of fledging more chicks.
Tikmēr RLK/KA85 ir meklējis barību okeānā. Šis ir viņa ceļojums no 27. decembra līdz 28. decembrim, kas pārklājas ar citām Ziemeļkaraliskā albatrosa populācijāmMeanwhile, out on the ocean RLK/KA85 has been foraging. This is his journey from the 27th of Dec to the 28th of December which overlaps with other populations of Northern Royal Albatross
GLG tag updates while she is on the nest.
These are mostly very accurate, (to within 10m) but occasionally, satellite placement gives what we call and ‘outlier’. We know from viewing the cam that GLG stayed on the nest the whole time.
Today's GPS tag update of RLK/KA85, GLG and 10 juvenile toroa and from Pukekura tagged 25th of September and 5th of October 2024.
GLG dodas tieši uz okeānu diezgan lielā augstumā, kā redzams šeit no viņas GPS atjauninājuma.Sharyn Broni (Ranger, DOC)
GLG heads directly out to the ocean at a fairly high altitude as seen here from her GPS update.

GLG's tracking data:
After leaving the headland for her first tracked foraging trip GLG headed north as did RLK/A85. But unlike him she has stayed closer to the South Island of New Zealand and has headed into the Cook Strait between the South and North Islands.

The juveniles fledged between the 27th of September to the 14th of October 2024. They will not make landfall until they return to Pukekura in 4 to 10 years’ time. Although recently two 3-year-olds have returned to Pukekura.
The Top of Bluff Track orphans tag had been functioning well, but we have had no further updates from this tag since early December. An analysis of the tag track data will be carried out to determine likely causes of tag failure. It is possible that he has not survived. The non-return rate of adolescents at 5 years of age (approximately) is up to 30% of the number fledged in any given year.
A closer look at the juveniles off the coast of South America.
