Name the Chick 2026!
This year's competition theme is habitat restoration.

Thanks to everyone for the many and varied submissions, over 500 entries were received. Now that submissions have closed, we are working with Te Poāri a Pukekura, the co-management trust at the headland, to select the winning name and prize winners.

Winners and the chicks name will be announced on 19 June 2026 (World Albatross Day).

The chick hatched on the 22nd of January 2026 and is now 145 days old (16th June).
Plateau chick was not weighed today (16th of June) He was a hefty 11kg last week and fed by WYL this morning. The average weight for day 145 is 10.5kg. He is also one of the 3 heaviest chicks out of the 39 at the colony. Chicks of healthy weight are weighed every 2 weeks so Plateau chicks next weigh in will be 23rd of June.

Plateau chick has been fed at total of 5 times since the last update. Longer trips are sometimes taken as the parents need to provide enough food for a growing chick and themselves.

WYL’s GPS update: Over the last 7 days WYL has been back twice to the headland, spending his time mostly off the Otago coast.

BOK’s GPS update: over the last week BOK has returned to the headland 3 times, her foraging trips have been distinct from each other unlike many previous weeks.
