Name the Chick is back for 2026!!!

Today Plateau chick was weighed at 1035 am and weighed 9.5kg. Average weight for a male of this age is 8.6kg. Two weeks ago, he was 9.2kg. There was a tiny spill at weighing time today, he was likely a bit more anxious following a feral cat hunting in the area yesterday.

Track the chick's weight: https://www.doc.govt.nz/nature/native-a ... ks-weight/

The chick has been fed three times by BOK and once by WYL since the last update. Longer trips are sometimes taken as the parents need to provide enough food for a growing chick and themselves.

WYL’s GPS update: Over the last 7 days WYL has been back once to the headland. The previous week he came in 5 times (2 of those within a twelve-hour period) and had been foraging much closer to the colony than on recent trips. He has headed further north up to the Kaikoura coast and Cook Strait again. Due to a glitch in the GPS this view is only from the last 4 days and not the northern journey.

BOK’s GPS update: over the last week BOK has returned to the headland three times. Unlike past weeks she has travelled further north off the Canterbury coast towards the Chatham Rise.
