The chick hatched on the 22nd of January 2026 and is now 68 days old (31 March).

The chick was weighed at 10:16am and was 6.2kg which is 800g above average for this age. Two weeks ago, he weighed 4.2kg but there was no weight taken last week. BOK had fed her chick earlier this morning.

Most chicks are hold enough to be handled by the bill now.

The chick had been fed 6 times by both parents since the last weight was taken, 2 times by WYL and 4 times by BOK.

BOK’s GPS update: the last 30 days of travel where BOK has stayed on the East Otago coast and has headed further south in the last 24 hours.

WYLs GPS update: WYL has consistently travelled further than BOK over the last 30 days and has mostly headed north of Pukekura.

As the chick gets bigger longer trips will need to be taken as the parents need to provide enough food for a growing chick and themselves.

Chicks become defensive when not brooded by their parents. The best way of defending itself after clacking with its beak is to throw up oil. The oil puts off would be or perceived attackers but also means the chick loses nutrients and waterproofing of the down. They can also be nervous when handled and it can take some time for them to get used to the weekly weighing in the post guard stage. This is especially true of males and when they are not quite big enough to be handled by the bill.
