Atkal Colins un atkal mazais atvemj barības eļļu.
Bērns jau pašā sākumā rādīja savu neapmierinātību un bija jāatliek svēršana. :(

Bet nākošā svēršanas reize varētu būt sarežģīta. :?:

Kia ora koutou (hello everyone)

Royalcam News

The chick hatched on the 22nd of January 2026 and is now 54 days old (17 March) and was 4.2kg at 1136am.

This is just under average for a male of 54 days. The previous weeks weight was 3.9kg making an increase of 300g. Both BOK and WYL later fed the chick who had spilled (vomited) on weighing.

Track the chick's weight: https://www.doc.govt.nz/nature/native-a ... ks-weight/

The chick had been fed 7 times by both parents since the last weight was taken. BOK has been in 5 times and WYL has been in twice.

Image BOK’s GPS update: lower left image: tracks from the last 7 days show a maximum distance from the headland of around 40km. Right image shows the last 30 days of travel where BOK has stayed on the East Otago coast.

WYLs GPS update:lower left image: tracks from the last 7 days. Right image: WYL has consistently travelled further than BOK over the last 30 days.

As the chick gets bigger longer trips will need to be taken as the parents need to provide enough food for a growing chick and themselves.

Chicks become defensive when not brooded by their parents. The best way of defending itself after clacking with its beak is to throw up oil. The oil puts off would be or perceived attackers but also means the chick loses nutrients and waterproofing of the down. They can also be nervous when handled and it can take some time for them to get used to the weekly weighing in the post guard stage. This is especially true when they are not quite big enough to be handled by the bill.
