Kia ora koutou (hello everyone)
Royalcam News
The chick hatched on the 22nd of January 2026 and is now 33 days old (24 Feb) and was not weighed today.
Chicks become defensive when not brooded by their parents. The best way of defending itself after clacking with its beak is to throw up oil. The oil puts off would be or perceived attackers but also means the chick loses nutrients and waterproofing of the down.
WYL had just fed the chick, so we know the weight is not an issue. At this age the chick’s weight should be between 2 and 3kg.

Sometimes meals are too large, and they are swallowed back down. Other times they may end up dropped on the ground.
Changeovers by the parents have been frequent, with 4 occurring since the last update and foraging trips have been relatively short.
As the chick gets bigger longer trips will need to be taken as the parents need to provide enough food for a growing chick and themselves.

Plateau chicks weight update:
As WYL was brooding the Plateau chick this morning, it was possible for Scott to approach and weigh the chick without it being alarmed and too nervous to handle. The scales maxed out at 2.6kg which is the average weight of a 34-day old male.
Next week weigh day will be on Monday, and we will likely be using a small basket and bigger scales.
