Pot Plant Owl
27 & 28 Dec: I'm going to have to think of other things to write aside from "the owl family is still with us".....I'm starting to sound like a broken record!
This photo was taken last night..27 Dec. Spot the chick and Lady enjoying our garden.
28 Dec: owlets are making a HUGE mess of our awning on the balcony. Lady is in her pot plant. Weather today is much cooler which is a big relief.

Labdien Fērbijzemē!
Nu ļoti mīļš šogad tas puķpodiņš - nekādi nevar no viņa šķirties. Arī medījums parādījies podā, tikai sīči paši netiek galā. :P

30.dec.

30 Dec: the owl family are in my bad books this morning...
I awoke to find them chomping on one of our garden birds...seriously not happy with them.
Apart from evidence at one chick's feet, they are each sporting new feather 'lipstick'.
Naughty owls! Stick to insects in this garden please...you know the rules!
31.dec.

31 Dec update: After a lot of rain last night, we woke up to a very wet balcony and no owls.
However we can hear them nearby. Judging by the noise of the garden birds, the owls are not too far away. I'm not ruling out the possibility that as soon as their feathers dry completely, they may fly back to the balcony later today.
Heavy rain predicted here this evening. While it may prevent us from seeing the owls flying around or on webcam, this rainfall prediction makes me so happy. It puts a stop to a lot of fireworks.
Here's wishing you all a kind and blessed 2019! Thanks for following....

Neviens no pārējiem ūpjiem netika redzēts..
Pot Plant Owl
2 Jan update: no owl family on the balcony when we woke up but about five minutes ago..our time 13h05...our parrots went beserk. They spotted one of the owls flying their window.
Low and behold, we have a stinker visitor..this is why we keep the webcam up.
Second post for 2 Jan and this one's a biggy:
The owlet that returned to the balcony remained on the lip of the pot plant looking very docile. By 6pm our time, the chick was still there - barely able to keep its eyes open. Allan and I decided to contact our wildlife rehab friend, Murray, to come and take a look.
Before Murray came through, I managed to catch the owlet and out it in our bathroom where it remained until Murray arrived.
When Murray arrived, he tasked me with holding the owlet while he took a swob and ran a test for the horrible disease called trike. His portable microscope was unable to detect trich but it doesn't necessarily mean the chick is clear of trich. Tomorrow morning we have to take the chick to the specialist avian vet for re-testing.
Murray found that our owlet was dehydrated so gave the chick something to help the dehydration. The dehydration could be why the chick was so docile. Another reason the chick was docile may be a reaction to poisons.
Tomorrow the vet will re-test for trike, check hydration levels and test for any poisoning.
For now, the owlet is in a small box. Murray has given us two baby rodents to throw in the box for food. Fingers crossed that the owlet eats tonight - that will be a very good sign.
No sign of Lady, Pappa or our other adopted chick. We will keep an eye out / ear open for any signs of the rest of the family.
I am so grateful that this little one came back to its 'home' on the balcony in its weakened, dehydrated state. It gave us the opportunity of catching it and taking it to experts for testing.
We can't thank Murray and Peggy enough for sacrificing his evening and coming immediately to our rescue - even providing food for our owlet.
I'll post a few pictures of the examination in a separate post. Thanks to everyone for your concern and we will keep you updated.

Tiek lūgta vietējo palīdzība to atrašanai...

Our second chick came back to the balcony. It is on the balcony awning.
Our sick chick didn't eat anything and is quiet and weak. Allan is taking it to the vet shortly so will update later.
No sign of the parents..will keep an ear out for garden bird alarm calls.
SECOND UPDATE 3 JANUARY:
The vet confirmed the early stages of Trich (Trichomonas) in our chick. Terrible news but it is treatable. We are now tasked with locating and catching the rest of the owl family to test them too.
As luck would have it, our second intrepid explorer came back to the balcony early this morning and sat on the balcony awning.
Murray came round and together with our neighbour, Craig, helped us catch second chick in a net.
The second chick was also badly dehydrated so after getting some fluids in it, it too is on its way to the vet for treatment.
That is the good news.
The not-so-good news is that the parents were nowhere in sight as we caught the chick. No dive bombing or alarm calls. We don't know what this means at this stage.
For now, our two owlets will be treated and should recover. We have to keep watching out for the parents to see if they are around.
ANYONE IN THE RADIOKOP AREA, JOHANNESBURG: Please be on the lookout for any owls closer to the ground, especially owls who are not moving much. Contact us immediately..don't wait for even an hour to see if the owl moves.
Thank you.
THIRD UPDATE TODAY:
The two little owlets are at the vet being treated for trich. The chicks will be at the vet for a good couple of weeks. Vet wants to make sure that trich is treated properly. At the same time, vet wants to make sure that the chicks can hunt for themselves properly before returning 'home' to this area. If we bring them back here too soon and they can't hunt properly & parents aren't around, we're going to have to hunt for them....haha..not a chance! So the goal is now healthy owlets who can feed and hunt for themselves before they are released back into the wild.
Our focus now is on Pappa and Lady. We are looking for the parents now to see if we can catch them for trich testing.
Should be easy...
Update on owl parents:
At 7:30pm, just as we were ready to go inside make food, we heard Pappa hooting. A good, vocal hoot from Pappa, followed by a long flight past us to the neighbour's rooftop. No sign of yet but that's okay. We are still hopeful that we will see her soon.
Here's Pappa...

6 hrs ·
We are devastated..
The first owlet we took to the vet died this morning.
I went to the vet to see the owls and was told the news. Overnight, despite the treatment, the owlet had more legions in its mouth and succumbed to the disease this morning.
The second owlet has also developed two legions. The next 24 hours is critical.
For now, our little stinker is hanging in.
It has a very kind lady, Daria, looking after it. The chick is being hand fed, medicated, kept in a dark, quiet area and monitored all the time.
We will be keeping in touch with the vet and will update further tomorrow.

1. Inficēts vecāks, kas baro jaunos
2. Piesārņots dzeramais ūdens
Mēs to apzināmies, tāpēc, lai iztīrītu inficēto vannu, mēs to iztukšojam ik pēc dažām dienām un atstājam to saulē izkarst.
Aicinām ikvienu, lūdzu, bieži iztukšot putnu vannu un ļaut tai nožūt saulē pirms uzpildīšanas.
Tracy and I are absolutely gutted. We thought we had got the chicks to the vet on time. Sadly the first one we took passed away yesterday. The second chick is still fighting for its life.
But, I am making this post about the terrible disease that is killing off the urban owls in Johannesburg. I have spoken to 4 of Johannesburg's owl rehabilitation centres and, amongst Spotted Eagle Owls, the disease is horrific.
To bird enthusiasts, the Trichomonas disease condition is also known by such names as "trich" (said like 'try-k') or "Canker"
Trichomonas is a protozoan organism that is commonly found in the mouth, throat, gastro-intestinal tract and upper respiratory tract of pigeons, doves, chickens, canaries, raptors and a variety of (parrot) species including budgerigars, cockatiels and Amazon parrots. Both domestic and wild bird species can be affected.
Transmission of the parasite from one bird to another occurs in one of three ways:
1. Infected parent feeding young
2. Contaminated drinking water
3. Infected bird is a prey meal for another bird (raptors most commonly)
In Johannesburg, people are proud of their gardens and love the garden birds that they attract. Including doves, pigeons, sparrows, weavers etc. Most people (like ourselves) put out feeding trays for the birds and have bird baths. It is these bird baths that are responsible for transmitting the disease.
We are aware of this, so to clean the bath of Tryk we empty it out every few days and leave it to bake in the sun for a day.
So, this is an appeal to everyone with a Bird Bath, please empty it out frequently and let it dry in the sun before refilling it.
Regards
Allan

Nebūtu šis balodis, būtu cits. Ja infekcija tur plosās, tas var notikt ar jebkuru plēsējputnu.
Tas izklausās tikpat traģiski kā Āfrikas cūku mēra plosīšanās. Nopļauj visus savā ceļā.
Traģiski

Update on our chick:
The disease is progressing but the chick is fighting it hard. Daria is doing everything she can to save it. Our chick is being fed artificially because it has stopped eating.
Daria is taking the chick home today to look after over the weekend.
We will see it again on Monday. We're not giving up on this chick...Still no sign of Lady.

Lēdija redzēta netālu no balkona palmā.

06 Jan update: We found Lady early this morning high up in the palm tree near our gate. Her right eye is closed and this could point to her having this disease too.
We have been trying to figure out how to catch her. This evening, we will try to entice her down using a rat and baby chicks from our wildlife rehab friends, Murray and Peggy.
We're also waiting for a call from Daria about how our chick is doing. Will keep you posted.
Latest update 6 Jan:
Our second chick has died.
We spoke to Brendan from the Owl Rescue Centre. He's been very busy recently with Spotted Eagle Owl rescues in the Radiokop / Honeydew area because of trich.
Brendan spoke at length with Daria about the two chicks. Apparently the vets are struggling against what appears to be a new strain / strength of trich that is not responding to usual treatments.
Owls in our area - Radiokop and Honeydew - are dying at an alarming rate recently despite receiving treatment at an early stage.
Upon closer inspection of the owl in the palm tree by our gate, I believe now that the owl is Pappa and not Lady. If Pappa, he has a 90% chance of having trich (his right eye is completely shut) which means that if he dies, the Pot Plant Owl legacy and family die too.
Despite being beyond devastated and battling to see through tears, we are trying now to get the owl caught ASAP to be treated ASAP.
If we fail, the PPO family will be no longer.

Pot Plant Owl
07 Jan....Pappa made it through the night and is back in our palm tree. We are so happy because the 'Save Pappa' mission can try again. I couldn't (through tears) update you all last night about what transpired yesterday with our first 'Save Pappa' mission. Here's how it went:
The Owl Rescue Centre came out to catch Pappa. When they arrived, our amazing neighbours..list to follow at the bottom of this post...came out to help. Brendan from Owl Rescue Centre looked at Pappa through binoculars and confirmed that he has trich. A plan was hatched and Brendan put us all into position...some with nets, some watching for directional flight.
At the best of times, any well laid out plans can go awry. Add a wise owl who doesn't want to be caught to the mix and it turns into a circus.
Pappa flying well, changing direction as if to say "Really! Is that all you've got?" Minions charging around like headless chickens after Pappa..tearing up stairs to balconies with vantage points and bundi bashing in the wetland looking for him.
As a big storm cloud rolled in, we had to admit defeat. Our beautiful, strong Pappa who has been visiting our balcony since the first night we moved into our home (13 years) and whose been flying in our complex for longer (16 years) was not going down (to the ground) without a fight. Despite the trich, Pappa still has some fight left in him which is why he has survived for so long.
Our wonderful neighbours in no particular order of brilliance are:
Colin and Amanda (Mandy)
Deon and Inga
Craig and Audrey (who is sick and still helped)
Talita and two children..Viaan and Leandri
And thanks, as always, to Murray!
Will post a video of rescue attempt one shortly.

Ūpju vecāku meklēšanā un ķeršanā iesaistīta plaša sabiedrība. Tiek vākti ziedojumi.

Pot Plant Owl
Rescue efforts to catch Pappa have been unsuccessful because he's been flying too well.
Unfortunately Pappa has now disappeared. Every effort is being made to find him. The local newspaper has run a story about Pappa so the whole community is involved. I'll keep you all posted.
I've been asked by PPO followers to give you our suggestions for donations to help with the rescue efforts. Individuals like Brendan from the Owl Rescue Centre and our neighbours are driving around paying for their own fuel / gas, looking for Pappa. If you'd like to make a donation..however small...you can do any of the following:
1. Donate into our PPO Human PayPal account for us to distribute to volunteers for fuel etc. Email address is enquiries@falcon-africa.co.za
2. Donate directly to the Owl Rescue Centre. Their banking details will be on their website. Please reference your donation as "Pot Plant Owl".
Thank you!

The local community newspaper published an article calling for residents to be on the lookout for Pappa. We received a photo of him on a roof in the neighbouring complex. He is still flying strongly but has not returned to our area.
Unfortunately we also received confirmation that Lady has died. Her body has been found. Regards from Allan.

Iespējams, ka Papiņš nav slims ar nejauko trihomonu kaiti. Viņam tomēr esot jau 16 gadiņu... :P

18 Jan update: Here's a recent picture of Pappa. Brendan from Owl Rescue Centre isn't convinced that he has Trich. His right eye needs attention but he's looking okay..especially for his age that we estimate at 16 years old.
Thank you for your kind donations. We return on Sunday so on Monday we will forward all payments to owl / wildlife 'Angels'.

28Jan..so check first post below.
GOOD NEWS! Pappa was spotted on our rooftop this evening. He didn't hoot so we didn't hear or see anything but neighbours saw him. A few other people in the area also saw him tonight and let us know. Apparently, Pappa is flying well!
