What an exciting day! We had an immature golden eagle between 1-2 years old fly into the nest as Baron & Baroness were doing nestorations. The immature birds are dark brown with white patches at the base of the primaries in the wings & at the base of the tail. The golden nape can be seen on this one. They have a strongly hooked bill.
This golden flew in fast as B & B alerted -Baron took off to the left. Baroness stood up with wings outstretched wing slapped the intruder before flying off. They circled the area for several minutes until Baroness landed on the left branch. Baron continued to fly around the nest protecting it and then landed on the left branch. Baroness took off to the nest to flush the golden out but couldn't and flew back out while Baron remained on the left branch. The golden stayed on the nest 6 minutes until it flew off to the left - both B & B returned afterwards to re-claim their nest.
The golden eagles are more aggressive than white-tailed eagles. This golden was most likely just passing through the area and will continue moving on. It did not pose a threat to B & B and was not after it's nest. Here are some scaps of the action today. I hope you enjoy them.
